According to reports, Moraff and Fan spent time in Maine looking for a candidate to run against Susan Collins. Platner later recounted that they came to his house in the summer of 2025 after searching for a working-class, populist candidate.
Platner told interviewers that Moraff and Fan were specifically looking for someone with working-class appeal and economic populist views.
Both Moraff and Fan have been described in news reports as organizers associated with or active in Democratic Socialist circles, and several reports credit them as the people most responsible for recruiting Platner into the race.
