To be a God-fearing people goes beyond subscribing to religion. The fear of God has zero to do with closing the streets on Fridays and Sundays to purportedly worship God. To fear God is to let our primal instincts be curtailed by certain ethics and values. -Ambimbola Adelakun.
Finance tip (Honest advice),
For my young men, this is the honest truth.
In your formative stage, leave woman alone. I beg of you. There are so many women in this world that you will get tired.
Focus.
When you make money, they will come (both the good and the bad).
Don’t excessively chase any woman with your sweat and scarce resources . If you are lucky to find one that loves you sincerely, settle down quickly and build together so you can focus.
When building, two heads are better than one.
Aside that, please focus.
When people say, It’s your wedding, do it your way, I just laugh. Clearly, they didn’t grow up in my family.
When my husband and I got engaged, both families called us for a meeting to discuss the wedding.
Mind you, we were just starting life. He had finished NYSC barely a year earlier. I was still doing my internship.
So we sat down with confidence and announced our budget. We’re planning for about 500 guests. The room went quiet for about two seconds…
…before everyone burst into laughter. My dad asked, is that for the pre wedding or the actual wedding? My mother in law looked at us and said, my only son? My dad followed with, my first daughter?
In other words, they politely informed us that we had absolutely no idea what we were talking about. That was the day we lost control of our own wedding.
From that point on, our only real assignment was to choose the colours. Everything else had apparently gone to a committee we weren’t members of. 😂
On the wedding day, I smiled at so many people whose names I didn’t know. My husband and I spent part of our reception whispering to each other, who are those people? I have no idea. They’re your guests. No, I think they’re yours.
Turns out they belonged to neither of us. They belonged to our parents. The funny part? Those same strangers came bearing gifts, envelopes and prayers. So we stopped asking questions. 😂
Then, after the wedding, another assignment landed on our table. Bring all the gifts together, write down every single person’s name. Record exactly what each person gave.
I thought it was just for memories. Years later, I discovered the truth. That list wasn’t a souvenir. It was an accounting ledger.
Apparently, Nigerian parents keep wedding records the same way banks keep transaction histories. When it’s someone else’s turn to marry, they simply open the book and say,
The Okafors gave us ₦50,000 in 2009. Good. Return ₦50,000… or more if inflation has behaved badly 😂
That was the day I realised a Nigerian wedding isn’t just a celebration. It’s also a long term reciprocal investment.
STREET BEGGING was one important reason why my restaurant business failed.
Let me explain.
Just because AMALA ROYALE was owned by a young person, we designed it to cater to the taste of young people in the community.
It worked.
It became a hub where young people gathered to discuss football, music and politics after meals.
About a year after we opened, these guys started manning the roads leading to the restaurant, begging from our customers.
There’s one day I will never forget.
I saw a good, regular customer of ours and asked why he had stopped coming.
He simply said:
“Why I go dey come spend 10k for your restaurant and still hold 10k for boys for junction?”
That statement hit me.
We sourced some things locally to empower their mums and dads. Fufu, nylon bags, etc., including labour, were sourced locally.
I supported their carnivals and other community events. I gave them food.
But they didn’t care.
Eventually, we had to close down.
And when we closed, it wasn’t just the end of a restaurant.
It was the end of business for some of them, their parents and their neighbours too. Na the butcher I pity pass, man was making 6k daily preparing goat meat.
"We have a president whose nationality we do not know because he carries a Guinean diplomatic passport. Whose genealogy we do not know, and we now understand President Buhari thought the same thing too. Whose primary school we do not know, whose secondary school we do not know, who now claims he went to university..." — Chidi Odinkalu, ex-chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
The funniest thing is that the Yoruba Omoluabi Virtues we were taught while growing up are the things I see in H.E Mr Peter Obi.
I have never seen those virtues in Bola Tinubu.
