🇬🇷 The Lady of Ro 🇬🇷

Not every hero carried a rifle.

Some carried a flag.

On the tiny, windswept islet of Ro, where the Aegean meets the horizon, Despina Achladiotou stood alone for decades.

Every morning she raised the Greek flag.

Every evening she lowered it.
No matter the storm.
No matter the wind.
No matter the loneliness.

She asked for no recognition.

She simply believed that even the smallest corner of Greece deserved to greet each sunrise beneath its flag.

When she passed away in 1982, she was buried with full military honors on the island she had loved and guarded.

Today, Greek soldiers continue the tradition she began.

Some people defend a nation with words.
Some with weapons.

She defended it with unwavering devotion one sunrise at a time.

“One Woman. One Flag. One Lifetime of Devotion.”

“She never asked if the weather was fair. She simply raised the flag.”

Some heroes never fired a shot.
They simply refused to let the flag fall.

For decades, Despina Achladiotou — the Lady of Ro — raised the Greek flag every sunrise and lowered it every sunset on the tiny island of Ro, through storms, solitude, and the passing of time.

Today, Greek soldiers continue the tradition she began.

It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to Jeanne Gibson, our beloved Rosie the Riveter, has passed away today, July 29, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100. With her passing, we don't simply mourn the loss of a beloved friend, we honor the life of an American hero whose courage, dedication, and unwavering spirit helped shape history, and will continue to inspire generations to come.📷📷
At just 18 years old, Jeanne left her home in Minnesota in the summer of 1944 and answered her nation's call, becoming a welder at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle. With determination and grit, she helped build destroyers that strengthened the Allied war effort during World War II. She later continued her service with the Army Transportation Corps in Juneau, Alaska, embodying the resilience and patriotism of the Greatest Generation.
Yet Jeanne's legacy extended far beyond the war. She earned her Ph.D., dedicated three decades to teaching, earned her private pilot license, and spent the rest of her life proving that courage, determination, and purpose know no age.
In 2024, Jeanne and her fellow Rosies were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, one of our nation's highest civilian honors, recognizing the extraordinary women whose sacrifices and determination helped secure victory during World War II.
To all of us at Pacific Historic Parks, Jeanne was far more than a Rosie, she was family. She traveled to Hawaiʻi time and again to share her remarkable story with visitors, inspire local students, and ensure that the sacrifices of the Home Front would never be forgotten. Her radiant smile, generous heart, and boundless enthusiasm touched every life she encountered.
She had a special gift for encouraging young girls, reminding them that no dream was too big and no obstacle too great. Through her words and her example, she inspired generations to believe in themselves and pursue lives of courage, service, and purpose.
Jeanne remained a tireless advocate for preserving the legacy of the Rosies, volunteering at Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park on "Rosie Fridays" and ensuring the stories of the women who helped win the war would continue to inspire future generations.
In one of life's poignant moments, just days before her passing, Jeanne was celebrated with a Wall of Honor banner at the park she loved so dearly and recognized during a San Jose Earthquakes halftime ceremony honoring Bay Area heroes. It was a fitting tribute to a woman whose life was defined by selfless service, quiet strength, and extraordinary grace.
Though Jeanne has taken her final flight, her legacy will never fade. It lives on in every story she shared, every young person she inspired, every life she touched, and in the enduring example of courage she leaves behind.
Our hearts are with Jeanne's family, her fellow Rosies, and all who were blessed to know and love her.
Rest in peace, Jeanne Gibson.
Thank you for answering the call when your country needed you most. Thank you for showing generations what courage looks like. We will remember you always

Ο Αντίοχος ο Μέγας και η ξεχασμένη Ελλάδα της Ανατολής

Υπάρχουν στιγμές στην ιστορία όπου μία μόνο ημέρα φανερώνει τι μπορεί να κατορθώσει το ανθρώπινο θάρρος και η στρατηγική ιδιοφυΐα.
Τέτοια στιγμή ήταν η σύγκρουση στο όρος Λαβού, στις απόκρημνες πλαγιές του Ελμπρούς, τον Ιούνιο του 209 π.Χ.
Εκεί ο 32χρονος Αντίοχος Γ΄ αντιμετώπισε τους Πάρθους σε ένα από τα δυσκολότερα πεδία μάχης της αρχαιότητας.

Οι Πάρθοι είχαν αποκλείσει τα στενά με κορμούς δέντρων και είχαν στήσει ενέδρες. Περίπου 40.000 άνδρες περίμεναν στα ορεινά περάσματα των 1.750–1.900 μέτρων.
Απέναντί τους προχωρούσε ένας στρατός 45.000 ανδρών:
10.000 Αργυράσπιδες και Μακεδόνες φαλαγγίτες
15.000 Θυρεοφόροι και Θωρακίτες
2.500 Κρήτες τοξότες
2.000 εταίροι
6.000 Κούρτιοι και Ιρανοί σφενδονήτες

Αυτός ο στρατός είχε ήδη διασχίσει την τρομερή αλμυρή έρημο Νταστ-ε Καβίρ. Είχε υποτάξει την Αρμενία και την Ατροπατηνή Μηδία.
Περισσότερο από έναν αιώνα μετά τον Αλέξανδρο, η αλεξανδρινή τόλμη δεν είχε σβήσει.
Ζούσε ακόμη στα γυμνάσια της Βακτρίας, στις ελληνικές πόλεις της Συρίας και της Μεσοποταμίας, στα ελληνικά που μιλιούνταν από τη Μεσόγειο μέχρι τα όρια της Ινδίας.

Τη νύχτα της 6ης προς 7η Ιουνίου 209 π.Χ. ξεκίνησε μία από τις πιο τολμηρές νυχτερινές επιχειρήσεις της αρχαιότητας.
Οι 2.500 Κρήτες τοξότες υπό τον Πολυξενίδα τον Ρόδιο ανέβηκαν σιωπηλά σχεδόν δέκα χιλιόμετρα μέσα στο σκοτάδι για να εμφανιστούν στα νώτα του εχθρού.
Με το πρώτο φως, 15.000 Θυρεοφόροι και Θωρακίτες επιτέθηκαν μετωπικά. Πίσω τους οι σφενδονήτες εξαπέλυσαν καταιγισμό βαριών βλημάτων.

Οι Πάρθοι αντεπιτέθηκαν με λύσσα και έφεραν τους Θυρεοφόρους στα όρια της καταστροφής.
Τότε εμφανίστηκε ο ίδιος ο Αντίοχος.
Επικεφαλής των 10.000 Αργυρασπίδων όρμησε στο πιο δύσκολο σημείο.
Οι σάρισσες χαμήλωσαν. Το ατσάλινο δάσος προχώρησε.
Την ίδια στιγμή από τις κορυφές ακούστηκαν ελληνικές ιαχές. Οι Κρήτες είχαν φτάσει.
Η παρθική παράταξη βρέθηκε ανάμεσα σε δύο πυρά. Η κατάρρευση ήταν ολοκληρωτική.

Πάνω από 20.000 Πάρθοι νεκροί. Ο δρόμος προς την Παρθία, την Υρκανία, τη Βακτρία και τις πύλες της Ινδίας άνοιξε.
Από το 212 έως το 205 π.Χ. ο Αντίοχος πραγματοποίησε μία νέα «Ανάβαση». Πολέμησε στη Βακτρία, έφτασε στα σύνορα της Ινδίας, απέκτησε 150 πολεμικούς ελέφαντες και επέστρεψε φορτωμένος με πλούτη και κύρος.
Το προσωνύμιο «Μέγας» δεν ήταν υπερβολή.

Ο Αντίοχος συμβολίζει κάτι πολύ μεγαλύτερο από μία νίκη σε ένα μακρινό βουνό του Ιράν.
Συμβολίζει μία Ελλάδα που δεν μετριόταν με τα όρια του Αιγαίου, αλλά με την έκταση της γλώσσας, της παιδείας και της στρατιωτικής παράδοσης.
Μία Ελλάδα που έζησε στη Συρία, στη Μεσοποταμία, στην Περσία, στη Βακτρία μέχρι τις πύλες της Ινδίας.
Χωρίς αυτή την ελληνιστική οικουμένη, η μετέπειτα Ρωμανία (το Βυζάντιο) θα είχε λάβει εντελώς διαφορετική μορφή.

Εκείνο το ξημέρωμα του Ιουνίου του 209 π.Χ. δεν συγκρούστηκαν μόνο δύο στρατοί.
Συγκρούστηκαν δύο κόσμοι.
Και μέσα από τις κραυγές των Κρητών και τη θύελλα των σαρισσών των Αργυρασπίδων, ακούστηκε ακόμη μία φορά η ηχώ του οράματος που γεννήθηκε στην Πέλλα το 336 π.Χ.
Η Ελλάδα δεν ήταν μόνο ένας τόπος.
Ήταν η οικουμένη της Ανατολής. Ο πρόδρομος της ένδοξης Ρωμανίας.

The SMs already have antiship capability, but a sub-launched anti-air variant opens up much more interesting questions. For targeting will it talk to the new space-based distributed AWACS thing currently in development that I forget the name of, or are they going to mad dog it out of the tube?
