And Figure appears to be moving into a semi–soft robotics style, unlike Unitree, Optimus, and other firms — notice the flex in its foot.

The toe flex is actually huge achievement for humanoid.

The toe-flexing performs the roles of sensing and acting without any electronics or active control.

When the robot’s toe contacts the ground, its flexing motion automatically senses ground contact. This mechanical motion triggers the engagement of the spring tendon network, just like how a sensor would detect contact and send a signal. So, the toe flex physically senses the event instead of using an electronic sensor.

At the same time, this same motion acts on the leg’s internal mechanism by tightening tendons and switching the leg from a loose, swing-phase state to a stiff, load-bearing state. That is the actuator role. It directly changes the leg’s configuration and stores energy in springs for later release.

This mechanical action prepares the leg to bear load without needing active control or sensors.

During stance, the toe’s flexion helps distribute forces through the tendons to the knee and hip, allowing energy to be stored elastically instead of relying on motors. This reduces the torque demand on the joints and makes the movement much more energy-efficient.

At toe-off, when the toe extends again, it passively releases the stored energy and triggers disengagement of the clutch through the bistable joint. This rapid switch allows the leg to lift smoothly for the swing phase with almost no active input.

i.e. the toe flex acts as both a sensor and actuator in mechanical form. It decides when the leg stiffens and when it relaxes, linking stance and swing without electronics or control feedback.
