People make fun of German as sounding quite brash and guttural, but that’s only because Germany was for all intents and purposes, made into the villain of the 20th century. It’s however quite a beautiful language. Take the title of Decline of the West by Oswald Spengler for instance.

In German that title was originally called “Der Untergang des Abendlandes” or, more accurately titled ��The Downgoing of the Evening-lands” so titled because the sun always sets in the West. The Death of a great culture. The title of the book is something more poetic and more profound than what it has been translated to in English.

You perhaps think the language sounds quite harsh still, but it is no more harsh than any other Germanic language, and flows easier than most. It is no more guttural than languages such as French or Greek, but most like listening to those languages. My point is perhaps you have been persuaded by others from an influential age to hate something quite beautiful.

You may have had a poor opinion of German as a language before this, but I hope that after this you will give the language a listen, and perhaps realize it’s quiet pleasant sounding and meaningfully poetic.
