I sympathize with the general ambivalence about the burgeoning AI sector

But it does present a good transitional #altac option. Why?

1. Right now, there's a focus on training AIs to be better with highly specialized/expert data. PhDs have that expertise (cont)

Folks: I am a *huge fan* of informational interviews. They're the single most useful tool for PhDs seeking an industry role. Check out my free guide on how to conduct them linked below.
That said, there are a few key norms that info-interview requestors should abide by. A 🧵:

Yeah, I know that many grad students don't read documents on institutional strategy and planning, but you should. It's important to know the direction your institute is heading, as it can help you situate your own research. Give this one a read!

Science communication

[Carleton University GradPD @CarletonGradPD]

You can "mine" ⛏ your past for transferable skills. Take any professional experience, list the tasks involved, then list the skills you used to carry out each task. Repeat with other experiences, and soon you'll have a list of your transferable skills (with examples!).

[Carleton University GradPD @CarletonGradPD]

If you are a grad student, think of yourself as a knowledge professional in training. Academia represents only one segment of the knowledge economy. The skills you are developing in knowledge synthesis and mobilization are valuable in many contexts.
