@xEPluribusUnum Trust me if the Neo-Atheists hadn't hijacked the empirical sciences, this same crowd would be championing the crudest scientism going. Their position just tracks the opponent that's all the flip-flopping is.
I keep wondering why the current Arab intellectual milieu's Feyerabend-style line quietly vanishes the moment any public crisis touches science. The only answer I can land on is that they were using it opportunistically all along. No actual philosophy of science behind it.
It seems to me there’s a long tradition of treating the word “abstract” as in, “I abstract X from Y”, as if it solves everything. The word gets handed an explanatory burden it simply can’t carry on its own
Actual logician Jan Łukasiewicz on why the history of logic needs to be reconceived. Actual mathematician Nicholas Bourbaki on the relevance of Aristotle to math.
@al5awarzme What you try to do will only lead you to show that mathematics is dispensable from physics in principle and it is not easy to prove that. I shared with you a book about this before. Or you may join the other group who haven’t figure out yet why the one is a number not a measure
The value lay not only in the solution, but in the debates it stirred & you sense a fundamental difference, compared to other traditions, in the way the problem itself is understood and perceived when reading the geometric commentaries, especially after the 15th century.
This paper is a good example of a recurring problem in reading physics textbooks. Even a philosopher of science as good as Nancy Cartwright isn’t immune to it.

That is why many philosophers who are not technically grounded in physics fail to produce a consistent account of measurement, something that is usually clear enough to specialists. It is exactly the kind of mistake I would not want physicists to make.
At a workshop, I argued for two points that I think are fairly familiar to philosophers of physics, but less so to physicists: choosing an interpretation of QM isn't just a matter of personal preference, because each interpretation carries substantial theoretical commitments
