@riteshwriter The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced of the same. Italy partially did the same mistake (and then went on and made even worst mistakes).
This isn't what Azuma is talking about. That's like, a basic TVTropes/Fandom Wiki/YouTube essayist thing. Databasification (ala Azuma, Lev Manovich also wrote about databases in a similar time period) is slightly different

@badpunname@SlimeFancypants >Instead, McCloud's book is a clear attempt at doing scholarly work because he uses it to develop his own theories on what comics are (and what they should be). This stuff makes up a huge chunk of the book and influences most of his ideas of how comics work.
@badpunname@SlimeFancypants "A layman introduction" is something that takes theories already established by others and makes them easier to understand for a casual reader, but this is not the case of Understanding Comics. >
@MoustachedTrex@SlimeFancypants Henry John Pratt's The Philosophy of Comics is an excellent introduction to the subject of the theory of comics and art theory in general. It also contains some counterarguments to McCloud's theories.
@badpunname@SlimeFancypants >the fact that it can't separate doing theoretical work (describing what comics are) from writing an art manifesto (describing what comics should be according to him), etc...
@LUPINandSAS_fan Amazing quality! 😳 It's unfortunate to think that even though we have the technology to restore these pages from the magazines the publisher doesn't seem interested in doing a new complete edition.
