“Leaving Chelsea was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made in football. I had been there for seven beautiful years and I gave everything. Chelsea made me the player I became.

The fans, my teammates, the trophies we won together… those are memories I will carry for the rest of my life. But sometimes in football you feel you need a new challenge.

Real Madrid was the club I watched growing up, a dream for every player, and after so many years at Chelsea I felt the moment had come to try something different. It was not because I didn’t love Chelsea anymore, actually it was the opposite.

I left with so much respect and love for the club because I felt I had given my best there.
Of course, sometimes I think about what could have happened if I stayed.

Maybe we could have won the Champions League together at Chelsea, who knows? Football is like that. But I was lucky enough to still win it later with Madrid, and that was also a special moment in my career.

Even today, Chelsea will always be part of me. My kids are Chelsea fans because those were the years they remember the most. They grew up watching me play there, celebrating goals at Stamford Bridge.
