Some weeks back two friends were talking about money the way most people do today and I could see the frustration in their faces.

The bottom line of all this...

Instead, it replaces liquidity with structure.

That allows people to trade assets that were previously inaccessible, but it also means outcomes depend heavily on how the system is designed and maintained.

It’s an interesting experiment in how markets might work when liquidity is no longer the limiting factor.

Whether that’s a breakthrough or just a different kind of risk will only become clear with time.

How Can You Trade an Asset With No Liquidity?

In traditional markets, liquidity is everything.

If no one is buying or selling an asset, you simply can’t trade it. There’s no price, no guarantee of execution, and no reliable way to enter or exit a position.

Crypto runs into this problem constantly. Many tokens exist on-chain, but only a small fraction are liquid enough to trade on major exchanges. By the time an asset becomes tradable, much of the opportunity may already be gone.

Recently, a new protocol called @derp_trade has been experimenting with a different approach.

Instead of trying to solve liquidity directly, it asks a different question:
