Warden of @ULMC_’s Caseg Fraith Hut - well placed for the Ogwen Valley. I will repost or reply to mountain name interpretations, using the #MountainToponymy tag
On Sunday, we did a wonderful coastal walk on the west coast of the Orkney mainland, along the cliffs at Yesnaby
As well as dramatic cliffs there were sea stacks and some interesting geology
After our cliff walk at Yesnaby, we visited Skara Brae, an impressive and remarkably preserved 5,000-year-old Neolithic village located on the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of Mainland, Orkney, because it was buried beneath the sand
On this day 300 years ago: James Hutton was born in Edinburgh. He convinced people that the Earth’s crust was shaped not by one catastrophic flood, but by slow processes like erosion & volcanic activity over millions of years, earning him the title "The Father of Modern Geology".
From Carn Bàn Mòr, I could see that Sgòr Gaoith was only 2 km away with 100m of ascent and, in a moment of Munro madness, I decided to make a detour to bag it
A member of the group had planned to do this on the following day, but the weather forecast was likely to prevent this
200 million ya, Ireland and Scotland were a part of the same range as the Appalachian mountains, where, funny enough, the majority of Scottish and Irish emigrants settled in America.

@theboysbrigade@BBArchiveTrust We learnt that the flagstones and sandstones that now form the Orkney Islands were laid down as sediments in a huge lake (Lake Orcadie) in the Devonian Period about 380 M years ago, which filled and emptied many times
Something to talk about at our Sutton @u3a_UK#Geology group!
We had half an hour in Thurso after filling up with petrol and doing some shopping in @Tesco, before getting the ferry from Gills Bay to St Margaret’s Hope on Orkney
Found Pennyland House, where Sir William Alexander Smith (the Founder of @theboysbrigade was born)
@theboysbrigade@BBArchiveTrust Got this in the wrong order, but we visited the Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre on Burray on Saturday, before the Italian Chapel
Too late to change the order now!
It had a wonderful collection of fossils and we leant about the incredible #Geology of Orkney
@Player0129876@Chipzilla2k4@MichaelFKane This is an old version of a map I created in 2020, with a mistake I subsequently corrected
It has also been copied with the credit cropped out
If you want to use it again, please use the corrected version that credits its creator
@Empty_America Good to see the map that I created in 2020 for the #30DayMapChallenge still being used by @Empty_America for the #RightToRoam cause
Although it has the Black Sea mistake and someone, a long time ago, decided to crop off the credit and the date

Doggerland - the Europe that was.
Once connecting Great Britain to mainland Europe, this ancient land now lies submerged, claimed by rising seas after the last Ice Age.
@theiaincameron I am sure you are right!
English is so dominant that nobody could do without it!
The other interesting thing about Basque is that it is not an Indo-European language
We had a great week staying at the Avalon Studio in Aviemore, which we booked via @bookingcom, and climbing Munros
Nearby roads on the estate were Munro Place and Corbett Place, but there was no Graham (or Fiona) Place!
I was able to climb 7 of the 8 Munros that I had hoped to
