Today, I signed an executive order declaring a statewide drought emergency. This activates Utah’s emergency response plan and helps state agencies coordinate drought response across the state.
All 29 counties are in severe drought, 22 counties are in extreme drought, and water supply forecasts are well below normal.
The good news is that Utah has spent years preparing for dry years by investing in reservoirs, conservation, and planning. Statewide reservoir storage is currently at 70% of capacity, but what we see in our reservoirs today is what we have.
I’m grateful to Utahns who have already cut back, to cities and water districts leading by example, and to our farmers and ranchers who are often the first to have their water supply reduced. Through the Agricultural Water Optimization Program, producers have invested more than $50 million of their own funds to improve water use and help protect Utah’s water resources and food supply.
We have enough water to get through this year if we treat every gallon like the finite resource it is. Please follow Utah’s weekly lawn watering guide, reduce outdoor water use, fix irrigation leaks, and avoid watering pavement.
Salt Lake City just made the biggest leap in the nation’s “Best Sports Cities” rankings — climbing from No. 44 to No. 12. The future of sports is happening here.

Great discussion today at the Utah Solutions Conference as @Clancy4Utah and SLC’s Chief Redd highlighted the ways Utah is working to end homelessness through coordination, public safety, housing and long-term support services. Grateful for leaders focused on real solutions.
Spent the day volunteering with @MikeLMower and @Clancy4Utah to help our partners Habitat for Humanity. They build safe, stable housing that changes lives. Habitat for Humanity brings people together to strengthen communities and create opportunities for families to thrive.
For the first time in years, Utah saw a statewide decline in homelessness.
This news reflects a sustained investment, stronger coordination between state and local partners, and a human-first approach focused on accountability, treatment, and long-term stability.
There is still more work ahead.

Apprenticeships give Utahns a path to earn while they learn, gain real-world experience, and prepare for quality careers.
We are proud to recognize National Apprenticeship Week in Utah.
Today the Utah Office of Homeless Services launched project BRIDGE: Case management, housing, legal services, reunification, mental health, & addiction treatment integrated.
@GovCox is showing how Utah can lead the nation in responding to homelessness with a holistic approach.
Utah is a state of builders, and this week, we’re celebrating National Apprenticeship Week and the thousands of Utahns who are earning while they learn, building skills that power our economy and strengthen our neighborhoods.
With more than 5,300 active apprentices and over 300 programs statewide, Utah is creating real pathways to good-paying jobs and long-term success.
This is what it looks like to invest in people — and to build a stronger future, right here in Utah.
@GovCox declared this week National Apprenticeship Week in Utah. We are committed to connecting Utahns with apprenticeship pathways that lead directly to high-paying jobs in growing industries. Find an apprenticeship event happening near you this week.
The @JobsUT report today continues to show Utah’s economy outperforming the national average. Mining remains an important part of that story, supporting jobs and contributing to Utah’s economic strength.
"Utah has beds where the homeless population can sleep at night. What it needs is a strategy to ensure shelters don’t become a 'permanent fix,' but rather an open door to familiar faces ready to help people try again."

For 100 years, they have stood watch, for names we will never know.
In 1921, an unknown American soldier was laid to rest at Arlington, chosen to represent every service member lost without identification.
At first, the tomb wasn’t guarded. Visitors came and went freely, sometimes treating it more like a destination than a sacred place.
That changed on March 24, 1926.
Concerned by the lack of respect, Army leadership ordered a permanent military guard.
And for a century since, the soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment—The Old Guard—have carried that responsibility.
Through rain and snow. Day and night. 365 days a year.
Under strict conditions. They are precise, intentional, and unwavering.
Because this isn’t just a tomb.
It’s a promise: that those who gave everything, even without a name, will never be forgotten.
Happy Birthday to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment. Thank you for your dedication for the last 100 years.
Under the leadership of @GovCox - Project BRIDGE will create individualized care plans connecting people to:

Utah is building a system that helps people move forward.
Today, the Utah Office of Homeless Services is launching Project BRIDGE, a targeted, 100-day effort to strengthen our homeless services system and connect Utahns to lasting solutions.
Utahns can be proud of this legislative session. We made meaningful progress on early literacy, tackling homelessness, restoring bell-to-bell learning in classrooms, protecting kids online, expanding housing and infrastructure, and advancing Operation Gigawatt to power Utah’s future.

Major new report on global trends in mental health, out today from Sapien Labs. Data from 2.5 million people across 85 countries.
Some of the most important findings:
1) Young adults used to generally have good mental health, compared to older generations. But now, in ALL countries examined, they are doing badly compared to older generations in that country.
2) "Four key factors have emerged that together predict three quarters of this effect. These are diminished
family bonds, diminished spirituality, smartphones at increasingly young age, and increasing consumption of
ultra-processed food."
3) The decline of young people's mental health is "most pronounced in the wealthier and more developed countries." They note that it is in such countries that smartphones are given earliest, junk food is most heavily consumed, spirituality is most diminished, and family ties are looser and often weaker.
4) "A younger age of first smartphone ownership is associated with increased suicidal thoughts,
aggression, and other problems in adulthood."
5) Here is their summary of findings on early smartphone ownership:
"GenZ is the first generation to grow up with a smartphone. Among this group, the younger they acquired their first smartphone in childhood, the more likely they are to have struggles as adults. These struggles extend beyond sadness and anxiety to less discussed symptoms, such as a sense of being detached from reality, suicidal thoughts, and aggression towards others. The effects arise through disruption of sleep, increased risk of exposure to harmful online content, predators, and explicit material as well as increased probabilities of cyberbullying during crucial developmental years. Excessive time spent on smartphones also diminishes the development of social cognition that requires learned interpretation of facial expressions, body language, and group dynamics. The negative impacts are particularly sharp below age 13."
