People w/ mental health conditions make up 53% of the population at Rikers.
On average, they are held 61% longer.
We pay $556,000 per person annually to keep them in jail. 90% on Rikers are held without conviction.
By contrast, it costs ~$42k to put them in supportive housing.

We have to abolish police. I don’t know what more people need to see to understand. We can have mental health units, car crash response units, rely more on tech for traffic safety… We have to begin the process of removing armed police from the streets
Majority of people in NYC do not own a car. Millions of people rely on public transit.
NYC is in midst of large #COVID19 surge.
NY needs to reinstate the mask mandate on public transit.
Please take 2 minutes and send letter to @GovKathyHochul and NY State legislators below.
Third year of this pandemic, and I'm thinking again about the devastation of structural abandonment, not just in who it kills and who it leaves vulnerable, but also in the ways this callousness has infiltrated the rhetoric of care.
As of midnight this morning, “loitering with intent to commit prostitution” is no longer a crime in California!
People who have previously been arrested and convicted of loitering for prostitution can now clear their records.

For those who keep saying they don't understand why we are so focused on masks: Mask mandates are the policy that would instantly make a huge difference to the lives of higher risk people. It would mean they could go on public transport, access medical care, & other basic needs.
Woke up still thinking about CDC Director’s tweet from yesterday. Actually, we *do* know how to slow COVID spread by implementing a multi-layered mitigation strategy. No, singling out only China for testing is *not* part of that strategy and will only breed xenophobia & racism.
Do your part to help protect yourself, your community, & our hospitals:
-Stay up to date on #COVID19 vaccines
-Test before going to large gatherings
-Wear a mask if you're in an area w/ high community transmission or if you choose
