Hi @JohnMu@searchliaison is it possible for a site penalised during a core algorithm update (specifically Oct 23) to have all of its pages instantly deindexed apart from its homepage? And for all new (valuable) pages still not to be able to get indexed? …
@searchmartin@JohnMu@searchliaison Last crawl was today for one page I just checked - it’s crawling but won’t index. Agreed on the point about good content being subjective and they previously had some low quality content (updated now). Just seems like a bizarre type of penalty but maybe it isn’t

Haven’t seen it before where G deindexes everything apart from the homepage - which is indexed normally & ranks as you would expect. Can this be a penalty? Would appreciate any insights 🙏
There’s no manual penalty notice in GSC and afaik I have investigated everything from a tech pov, but any other pages show as crawled not indexed. It’s a legit (fairly big) brand…
@Spadey12@jonoalderson@geake@yoast Make your content 10x better than theirs. Make the UX on your site better than theirs. Get featured in more publications and directories than them. Get better reviews than them. Post better social content than them. Make your GMB profile clearer/better than theirs. Etc
@BrockbankJames Agreed. Also, factor time for uploading/formatting/internal linking and all those little tweaks that add up to make your content helpful and awesome.
It’s easy to just think it’s written and then it’s done and dusted…
I wrote a post for the gold standard publication in our space @sengineland talking about how I think we move forward after the Google documentation leak

Draw your own conclusions, but these are my thoughts.
@suganthan@rossstevens_uk@darth_na Hopefully for them it will catch up with G once they realise SERPs are worse for binning off certain types of sites.
Some sites hit were terrible so I don’t disagree with the update entirely. But they could communicate better so legit sites can recover/avoid being wiped out.
@rossstevens_uk@suganthan@darth_na Their main goal should be to promote the best content/answer for the query.
I wonder who they think is going to come in and replace this content that people were putting time & effort (and careers) into? 😬
@suganthan@rossstevens_uk@darth_na I agree. But should it be? If you’re creating good content (even if the purpose is MFA), surely G are still better off ranking that content? I think G have gone too far with recent updates. Too many sites getting decimated and no feasible way to recover if you are hit badly.
