Not sure if it’s more sad that they were so easily conned or that they’ll just justify in their mind , at the end of the day, the other option was worse. And it will all stem from a persecution complex because people rightfully called them stupid and bigoted for having zero understanding of the implications of the politics they attached themselves to.
