Throwback to Cameroon, late 90s, so off beaten track no Irish embassy. No problem. Fluent French speaker, and Maastricht Treaty student, I knew I had right to seek help in an emergency from other EU embassies. UK embassy advised on first kidnapping attempt, the other we just ran.
