In light of the evolving #monkeypox outbreak with over 16,000 reported cases from 75 countries & territories, I reconvened the emergency committee. Based on the Intl. Health Regulations criteria, I decided to declare this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of Intl. Concern.
Evolutionary inevitability and covid: two and a half years into this pandemic and several surprises down the line, I would have hoped that ideas about evolution inevitably doing something like making the virus milder or slowing down rates of change, would have been put to rest.

@WHO@DrTedros@DrMikeRyan@mvankerkhove Ryan:
“The best way to get people vaccinated is to inform them, to educate, to have a dialogue and address people's genuine concerns when it comes to information and knowledge about vaccination especially for them, their families, their children, their parents, and community."
„We can hope for everything“ but „hope is not a strategy“ @DrMikeRyan and @mvankerkhove answering the question, if #omicron is going to be the last variant of concern.

"Last week, the highest number of #COVID19 cases were reported so far in the pandemic - and we know for certain that this is an underestimate”, says @DrTedros in WHO presser.
While Omicron appears less severe than delta, that does not make it “mild”, he says.
Start the winter semester later. Extend the break. Give people more time to prepare. Update vaccine mandates to 3 shots. Have N95 masks and rapid test kits ready to distribute. Install CO2 monitors. And listen to actual experts in epidemiology, education, and mental health.
