Still don't know what Runes are and too afraid to ask? Here are three explanations at different levels:

For your mother who doesn't understand any of this:

Runes is a new way to launch tokens on Bitcoin. Tokens can have utility, giving you access to things like voting, or they can just be “memecoins” that people trade for fun.

The model it uses stores information on the blockchain, letting it obtain the strong security model of Bitcoin. Runes could potentially bring more users and developers to the Bitcoin network.

For the average NFT bro:

Runes is a new fungible token standard launching on Bitcoin. By using the UTXO model for on-chain data storage, it inherits the security model of Bitcoin for stronger safety features and is also more resistant to reorgs. Runes is also lightning compatible, allowing Runes transactions to use this faster, more efficient system.

For gigabrain Devs (we had to ask one of our devs for this explanation):

Runes is a fungible protocol on top of Bitcoin. It is UTXO-model based, which means it inherits the security model of Bitcoin UTXOs management. It’s also SPV compatible, meaning you can generate compact proof of funds, be compatible with light wallets, and potentially integrate with the Lighting Network in the future.

It’s also designed to easily upgrade in a backwards-compatible way, so the protocol can and will continue to grow in features, thus making it a living and constantly evolving standard.
