This was a special morning as I joined leaders of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church to break ground on their new church in Lexington. This congregations' heart is already big - and today it just got a little bit bigger. Thank you for inviting me.

The Mass was celebrated close to the Feast of St. Peter Claver (September 9), and Fr. Norman Fischer talked about the significance of the patron saint to the local community.

On-hand for the groundbreaking were members of the parish's local council of Knights of St. Peter Claver, the largest historically African-American Catholic lay organization in the U.S.

Today is the feast of St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit missionary with a strong conviction for equality among all men. He spent his life in the service of African slaves brought against their will to South America. He is the patron saint of African missions and interracial justice.

Today, @BpStowe led a prayer service to kick off the Season of Creation and tree planting in honor of the late Fr. John Rausch, a great champion for the environment, especially in Appalachia. We were also joined by Rev. Leah Slade of Lexington Theological Seminary.
