The county just mowed the roadside in June, and an entire generation of monarch caterpillars went with it.
In a lot of America, the strip of grass and wildflowers along rural roads is the last place milkweed still grows.
Farm fields got sprayed. Suburbs got paved. The roadside ditch is where ground-nesting bobolinks, meadowlarks, pheasants, and bumblebee queens raise their young because almost nothing else is left.
June and early July are peak nesting season. They are also when most counties run their mowers.
A pheasant nest in early July still has eggs in it 21% of the time. A monarch caterpillar in June is 11 days from becoming a butterfly. The mower doesn't know. The mower keeps going.
But there's a fix.
Counties that delay roadside mowing until after July 15, mow at higher cutting heights (8–12 inches), use flushing bars on equipment, and target only the visibility-critical edges instead of the entire shoulder have seen big results.
Iowa, Minnesota, and Washington have programs along these lines. Most states don't.
If you live in a county that mows everything in June, call your county supervisor. Ask for a mowing delay until late summer. Most rural counties have never heard the request and would consider it.
The roadside isn't a lawn. It's the last refuge for a lot of species we keep wondering why we don't see anymore.
Imagine a community where a kod with no lunch money wasn't going hungry.. school employees didn't keep drawers of snacks to make up for the failure of humanity.. where people on the brink weren't pushed over.
The city of Andernach, Germany planted 101 varieties of tomatoes in the town center and told everyone to take whatever they wanted.
It was such a hit they did beans the next year, then added onions, fruit trees, lettuce, zucchini, berries, and herbs. All free to the public and maintained by the city.
Andernach is now known as the "edible city."
Philadelphia has been doing a version of this since 2007. The Philadelphia Orchard Project has helped establish 67 sites across the city with thousands of food-bearing trees.
Baltimore is planting fruit trees on sidewalks. Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, and Asheville all have public urban orchards.
A mature apple tree produces 400-500 pounds of fruit per year. A mature pear tree can produce for 75 years.
We've decided our cities should have trees. We just haven't decided those trees should feed people.
Would you support urban fruit trees and vegetables in your city?
shout out to the guy on Reddit who’s now being threatened by the police to “stop poking around” for asking a Little Caesar’s why they had hundreds of google reviews mentioning an arcade
ICE arrested Arlit Martinez two days before her 15-year-old son died from cancer. The Maryland mother of four was headed to work when she was detained. Despite urgent pleas from her family, lawyers, and doctors, she was not released to say goodbye. She is reportedly still in federal custody. Her husband is now left to grieve and bury their son alone. This is beyond cruelty.

4 days out from my life-changing surgery, @Aetna has denied the appeal for my brain surgery.
to be clear, when i signed up to aetna months ago, the coordinator had confirmed they would cover this surgery. then, a week ago, they said the surgery was too experimental/elective and denied coverage. we appealed. that appeal was just denied today.
now, my neurosurgeon is trying to do a peer-to-peer consult with someone at aetna to explain why i need it so we don’t lose the surgery date on monday morning. aetna is not being responsive.
this is sadistic and a violation of basic trust. please spread this so they can’t ignore it. they may not care if i live or die but people should know just what kind of company they’re dealing with. and please pray they are able to have a peer-to-peer consult with my neurosurgeon and have a change of heart.
THIS is what KEEPS happening to kids in schools who have NO security team to even attempt to save their lives.
Many have justified their deaths as the cost of freedom.
It is an awful video and our LAWMAKERS have accepted THIS as common occurrence for children in school.
The degree to which the algorithm on this platform is pushing video of the shooting is incredibly disturbing. There has to be some human that can turn the dial down in a situation like this.
