People are programmed to fear guns. I had a friend who I lost last year who lived alone and feared some of his neighbors. He'd never even touched a gun. So, I offered to loan him a break-top 28-gauge shotgun thinking that was as complex as he needed. He said no. That if he had it there, he'd be more afraid of the shotgun than his neighbors.

I was speechless. Thank God I grew up around guns. I sleep soundly.

I've never understood the reason for that. I've seen unconvincing explanations for it. Perhaps some sadist designed it originally and we keep doing it because it's always been done that way. From a financial standpoint, it seems the investment is already made. I don't see the point of trying to make them quit. To quote old Forrest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does."
