This day 116 years ago - 4 July 1904 - Tom Kiely of Tipperary became the first Olympic gold medallist from Ireland when he won the men's all-round championship in St. Louis.
Though John Boland had won the tennis singles and doubles in 1896, gold medals were not given until 1904.

This day 104 years ago – 1 July 1916 – the Battle of the Somme began.
Almost 2,000 men from the 36th (Ulster) Division died on the first day, and by its end, an estimated 3,500 soldiers from the island of Ireland had been killed, including 1,167 from the 16th (Irish) Division.
#OnThisDay 1691 Athlone falls to the Williamite forces. One of the bravest moments was when Sgt Custume & ten men charged out in full view of the enemy & broke down the bridge denying access to the city to Ginkel for a few more days. All 11 died doing so.

#OnThisDay 1932 Éamon de Valera announces Ireland will stop land annuities owed to Britain from the various Land Acts, thus starting the Economic War. The war ended in 1938 with the return of the three Treaty Ports which ensured Irish 'neutrality' in WW2.
