My name is Layali, and I am from Rafah, Gaza. I'm a mother of three, Mohammed, Assile and Khalil. I am writing to you from Mawassi camp seeking your help with an empty stomach while my kids are crying from hunger.
Before the war, our lives were filled with happiness and dreams of a bright future. My husband, Ahmad, owned several convenience stores, providing for our family, and I was deep into my studies, so excited about what lay ahead. Then, the war ripped all of that away from us. The place we once called home, where we shared many memories, has been reduced to dust. Every single one of my husband's shops, our only source of income, is gone too.
In the middle of this situation, food is more than just a necessity, it is hope that not everything is lost, that we can still provide some comfort and nourishment for our children.
We are now desperately trying to survive, with no idea what tomorrow will bring. In the very first month of the war, my youngest son, Mohammed, who was just two months old at the time and diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, had an operation due to a digestive malformation. His condition makes his dietary requirements very specific, this is a challenge when any food at all is a luxury that we cannot afford, and sometimes impossible to find.
Our biggest struggle right now is simply providing a meal per day for my children. Every day is a fight to find what we need to keep them fed and healthy, especially with Mohammed's medical needs.
