Unpopular opinion: “sleep when the baby sleeps” is the most useless advice ever given to a new mom. When exactly? Between the laundry, the bottles, and the anxiety? Be serious.

A baby can apparently feel dad’s presence without seeing him or hearing his voice. In a new Science Advances study, babies interacted with a completely unfamiliar man while either their father’s body odor or a clean shirt was placed nearby. When dad’s scent was there, the baby’s brain became more synchronized with the stranger’s brain, and the babies showed more positive excitement and engagement. The researchers describe it almost like the baby was able to “invoke” the father’s presence even though he wasn’t actually in the room. AND the more involved the father was in childcare, the stronger the boost in brain synchrony associated with his scent.
