Good to attend the reconstitution of the Climate APPG. As a member, I know how important its work is in pushing for meaningful climate action.

This summer was the UK’s hottest on record, 0.4°C warmer than the previous record set just a year earlier. We need to continue to tackle the climate crisis and hold our biggest polluters to account

NEW

UK GDP in August now up 0.7% on the 3 month measure… rises by 0.1% in the single month, defying expectation of a fallback after strong July.

June also revised up.

Heading for a decent Q3.

Five years on, we remember Sir David Amess, a dedicated parliamentarian who served his constituents with kindness and determination.

Today, my thoughts are with his family, friends and all who came to know him.

His murder struck at the heart of our democracy. We owe it to him and others we have lost to protect those who dedicate themselves to public service.

We will not allow hatred and violence to deter those who step forward to serve.

Thank you to @UKHofficial for announcing 100,000 new jobs for young people not in education, employment or training over the next few years.

This comes on top of a similar agreement reached last month with UK retail.

When I met Angela Rayner to campaign for change to overly aggressive council tax debt collection, with its unprecedented rapid escalation to balliffs, she nodded like most politicians do.

I explained it was destructive for individuals, councils and the economy. She listened more then said she'd change it. I was sceptical. Yet a consultation was launched within weeks and delightfully the change announced within 18mths (its in place from next April) - bullet train pace for politics.

I've a rule that if I campaign for a politician (of any party) to do something, and they do it, I say thank you. Its important to recognise it. So thank you so much Angela Rayner for listening and more importantly acting. The changes coming are a great start.

Too many young people have held back by cost and practical barriers, not ability, so this is great news for Sheffield.

This comes alongside free travel for under-18s from February and Sheffield joining the Government's new national taskforce to get more young people into education, work and training.

It’s wonderful to see so much action on giving Sheffield’s young people the best start

More evidence of UK economy’s strong first half to the year - despite the very real impact of the Iran war:
- @ONS have revised up growth (and gdp/capita growth) in Q2 to 0.5%
- confirms the UK as the fastest growing economy in the G7 in 2026 (given growth of 0.6% in Q1)

A brilliant conference under our new Prime Minister, with so much to take home. Can't wait to get to work.

Thank you to Crisis for inviting me to speak on their panel on our plans to end rough sleeping, the International Rescue Committee and their roundtable on the future of asylum and refugee protection and the Russell Group Students' Union on a new settlement for students.

This Labour government will build a National Care Service.

[BBC Politics @BBCPolitics]

Burnham says National Care Service “will be a landmark policy as significant as the creation of the NHS itself”

He confirms the state pension triple lock will be adjusted from 2030, generating savings to help “build up” the service

Expansion of Jobs Guarantee to put young disabled people at the front of the queue.

This is the kind of change we need.

At the weekend, I attended an event hosted by Sheffield Community Energy to discuss how community groups and places of worship might generate their own energy.

Public buildings having adequate funding to generate clean, renewable energy is at the heart of the concept of community energy and I’ll take everything discussed at the event forward to help ensure these routes remain open.

Tomorrow at @UKLabour Conference, I will announce that we will nationalise Avanti West Coast train services at the first opportunity.

We are building a railway Britain can rely on.

I am determined to be the one to fix our social care system.

The Graves Gallery has been a vital part of Sheffield’s artistic life for almost a hundred years, and many will be saddened by news that its doors will be closing.

The safety of the collection, staff and the visitors come first, so I’m pleased that an interim home has been agreed. I look forward to meeting the Gallery this week to hear more about the plans and how we can support them.

Most importantly, I'm looking forward to seeing plans for the future of the Surrey Street site. I know many will be hoping that it can be renewed and protected for future generations.

New standards for school dinners will mean no more deep fried food and an increase in the amount of fruit and veg being offered to pupils. The new regime, which will come into force next year, will mean cake will only be on the menu once a week in primary schools and twice a week in secondary schools. And for the first time school breakfast clubs will have to follow nutrition rules too.

[Abtisam Mohamed @Abtisam_Mohamed]

A win for rail passengers.

I’ve campaigned hard for this: when your train is cancelled, you shouldn’t be trapped by the ticket you bought.

From this Sunday, passengers will have an automatic right to switch to another operator without paying again.
