What is a Mugged LB?
A Mugged LB is a Linebacker who is aligned on the line of scrimmage in a gap between the tackles. To be considered a Mugged LB his toes must break the heels of the DL.
Over Sam: Over Front with the Sam aligned on the line of scrimmage as the “End Man.”
We refer to this spot as the EMOL: End Man on Line of Scrimmage.
Over Will: Over Front with the Will aligned as EMOL WK.
Over Mike-Str: Over Front with the Mike aligned as EMOL STR.
Over Mike-WK: Over Front with the Mike aligned as EMOL WK.
Over W-Mug: Over Front with the WLB Mugged in any gap between the Tackles.
Wide Dbl Mug: Wide Front with a LB MUGGED in BOTH
A-GAPS.
It’s extremely important to be able to communicate the DL’s alignment. We speak of their alignment in terms of what technique they’re playing. If I was the RG and the Coach said, What was the DT playing on you - and I said, He was playing a 3 tech - Now the coach understands what I was seeing in front of me.
This alignment system is consistent across football - the one nuance you’ll see are the alignments on an in-line TE.
Above, I have listed from inside out on the TE ~ 6i, 6, 9.
Also common to see, from inside out on the TE ~ 7, 6, 9.
