FARMERS ALLIANCE is calling for the immediate resignation of the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Mr. Charlie McConalogue.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Mr. Charlie McConalogue has sat idly by as Irish dairy farmers are being forced to slaughter 200,000 heavily in-calf cows. The Minister has done absolutely nothing to prevent this completely unnecessary and senseless act. The decision to slaughter these animals is a political decision not a scientific one.

One has just to look to across the water to our nearest neighbours where the Welsh Assembly has authorized its farmers to maintain the 250kg/Ha of Nitrogen from livestock manure.

It would appear that this senseless act of slaughtering perfectly healthy in-calf cows is a vain attempt by our Government to prove their “green credentials” to their EU masters irrespective of the devastating impact it will have on farming communities and food security.

Many suspect that these unnecessary slaughtering are to offset Dublin Airport’s Government supported proposal to increase passenger numbers by more than 25% which will result in the airport’s emissions increasing by more than 250,000 tonnes of CO2e. To put this into context this increase equates to almost 45,000 dairy cows.

McConalogue has also failed to safe guard farming and rural communities when it comes to the Nature Restoration Law. This Law will take thousands of acres of farmland out of production, will force the shutdown of many family farms, and will undermine our food security.

McConalogue’s response appears to be to just shrug his shoulders and tell the people that there is nothing he can do about it. This is an absolutely shocking attitude from a country’s Minister of Agriculture who unlike his Welsh counterparts has turned his back on farming and rural communities, and our agricultural industry.

We are losing the right to farm our land.

We are losing our property rights.

We are losing our agricultural industry.

This is all happening under McConalogue’s watch.

The deadline is getting closer to slaughter 400,000 animals (200,000 in calf cows) in the dairy herd. This is totally unnecessary and inhumane. Where are the animal rights groups now? Well bred heavily pregnant cows being lined up for slaughter while Brazil increases their herd by 50%! This does not make sense. Protests taking place in Cork today looking for an extension for this deadline is not an option. We in Farmers Alliance are looking for this inhumane act to be totally abolished.

The organic N (nitrogen) stocking rate derogation from 1st January 2024 will drop from 250kgN/ha to 220kgN/ha. Scientists have already stated this will make no difference to water quality. Farmers have invested hundreds of thousands of euros in their enterprises which includes slurry storage, low emission slurry spreading, creating buffer zones etc. These measures need time to work. The perfect example is in Timoleauge, West Cork, bearing in mind Cork county has the largest amount of dairy cows.

Teagasc’s Agricultural Catchments Programme (ACP) has been monitoring water quality in Timoleauge for the past 12 years. The purpose of the programme is to investigate the impact of agriculture on water quality in this area and other areas. Water quality readings are continuously collected at the outlet-point in Timoleague at 10 minute intervals. Nitrogen levels in Timoleague river catchment drops to lowest levels since 2010 despite increase in stock numbers. This drop in nitrogen is put down to changes in management practices in slurry use.

This unnecessary pressure will have a huge impact on farmers mental health in an already stressful environment where milk prices have dropped and input costs have sky-rocketed. Ireland is the most sustainable producers of milk in Europe. The 7.5 million litres of raw sewage equivalent to three Olympic size swimming pools going into our water courses on a daily basis need to be addressed and not the cows. Let common sense prevail.

a lot of people have been been reassuring me that if i don't want to do the london show and euro tour, that i don't have to and man i really appreciate that. you guys have bought tickets, hotels, plane tickets and god knows what else and you're still being so selfless and kind about my well being. that being said after a really special conversation with my family, we all unanimously agreed it would be the most beautiful tribute to my dads memory to get up there and make him proud. that being said there is gonna be a lot of emotional times, but i'm willing to be there if you guys are. london will be the hardest as his birthday will have been the day after, but i'm gonna get through it. i know i will because i've got you guys. so if you're wondering whether you should grab a ticket and stuff still, you still can haha. I'm gonna give the most amazing, personal, raw experience for you and even more importantly, my dad.
