On 18 May 1944, Allied forces broke through the Gustav Line at Monte Cassino, a turning point in the Italian campaign.

The Polish II Corps, led by General Władysław Anders, played a decisive role in this victory. Their courage and sacrifice, symbolised by the Polish flag raised over the monastery ruins, remain an enduring part of Poland’s military legacy.

Monte Cassino also reminds us of the strong bond between Poland and the United Kingdom, forged in war and carried forward through shared values and cooperation.

Today, we remember those who fought and fell.

We will remember them.

A woman is murdered by a husband, partner or ex every three days in Italy. This has to stop. RIP Giulia.

Avevamo tutti sperato in questi giorni che Giulia fosse viva. Purtroppo le nostre più grandi paure si sono avverate. Uccisa. Provo una tristezza infinita nel vedere le fotografie sorridenti di questa giovane ragazza e, insieme alla tristezza, una grande rabbia. Ringrazio le Forze dell’Ordine italiane e tedesche per il lavoro congiunto che ha assicurato alla giustizia il presunto assassino.

I dati ufficiali del Ministero dell’Interno dicono che al 12 novembre sono 102 le donne uccise in Italia nel 2023 e 53 le vittime per mano del proprio partner o ex. Una scia di violenza contro le donne che continua da anni con numeri addirittura più drammatici di questi in passato. Ogni singola donna uccisa perché “colpevole” di essere libera è una aberrazione che non può essere tollerata e che mi spinge a proseguire nella strada intrapresa per fermare questa barbarie.

È già stato approvato all’unanimità dalla Camera, e mercoledì prossimo sarà in aula al Senato, il nostro disegno di legge per il rafforzamento delle misure di tutela delle donne in pericolo grazie a una maggiore prevenzione - ammonimento, braccialetto elettronico, distanza minima di avvicinamento - l’arresto anche in “flagranza differita” e soprattutto attraverso tempi stringenti - 20 giorni - per valutazione da parte della magistratura del rischio e applicazione delle misure cautelari.

Abbiamo aumentato considerevolmente i fondi per il piano anti-violenza e per la tutela delle donne in uscita da situazioni di violenza.

È già pronta una campagna di sensibilizzazione nelle scuole con i ministri delle Pari Opportunità e della Famiglia, della Cultura e dell’Istruzione così come la campagna di diffusione del numero verde anti-violenza 1522, anche attraverso il coinvolgimento del mondo dello sport.

Eppure nulla di tutto questo sarà utile se non saremo in grado di affermare la grande verità che in questo momento straziante ha ricordato il papà della giovane Giulia Cecchettin: “L’amore vero non uccide”. L’amore vero non fa mai del male, solo una concezione malata del rapporto tra uomo e donna può farlo.
