NEWS: The House just passed both my PROTECT Hong Kong Act & the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act to send a strong message to Beijing that the United States will not stand idly by while the #Chinese government stifles free expression and tightens its grip on #HongKong.
Free and fair local elections are the cornerstone of self-governance in #HongKong. Beijing’s increasing hostility toward Hong Kong’s democratic traditions threatens the peace and stability that has allowed this province to prosper. Local elections should proceed without delay.
Earlier this week chilling documents came to light detailing how the Chinese Communist Party is cracking down on religious minorities and holding a million people in internment camps.
It’s time to sanction China for their blatant human rights abuses.
Today’s unanimous vote affirms to the people of #HongKong who have been fighting for months—that we stand with them in their pursuit of basic freedoms, like the right to due process, peaceful protest, free elections, and the right to live freely.
Another major victory for the pro-democracy fighters in #HongKong!
The Senate passed the bill I co-sponsored to prohibit the export of covered munitions items to the Hong Kong Police Force. The inhumane methods by the HK police need to end!
Proud of my colleagues in the House for passing the bipartisan Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019. Now it’s up to President Trump to promptly sign this bill. We must show our unequivocal support for the democratic aspirations of the people of Hong Kong.
#China is not respecting the ‘one country, two systems’ arrangement & they must be held accountable. I stand w/ the people of #HongKong & I’m proud to support the passage of the Hong Kong Human Rights & Democracy Act. This important bill will be sent to the WH & signed into law.
The assault on #HongKong’s liberties by Beijing’s communists is reprehensible and disgraceful. I’m glad the Senate passed a bill I cosponsored to show the world that the US stands with those marching to defend their freedoms & democracy. #StandWithHongKong https://t.co/BDhyjZf4Jx
Battle now largely focused on the w. flank of Poly U near Chatham road. A water cannon pelting protesters in repeated sorties, trying to dwindle supplies of firebombs. Many facing it full on, scalded by the liquid, screaming in pain while being hosed down #HongKongProtests#HK
The Chinese and #HongKong governments must immediately deescalate the situation and exercise restraint at #PolyU. More violence & bloodshed will only make things worse.
The world is watching. #StandWithHongKong#DemocracyForHK
Apple assured me last week that their initial decision to ban this app was a mistake. Looks like the Chinese censors have had a word with them since. Who is really running Apple? Tim Cook or Beijing? https://t.co/szA71AWDTo
