I was going through the news items about the kids who supposedly committed suicide due to NEET re-examination.

A few things stand out -

(1) Age - Some students were more than 20 years old with highest number being 22.
- 21 or 22 years means 3-4 attempts at NEET.
- Normally, a student would complete his MBBS by 22.5 to 23.5 years of age (depending on age at admission).
- Continued attempts inspite of 3-4 attempts shows you aren't built for this competition.
- This is not a healthy sign; can't imagine the pressure on the child to succeed.

(2) Interest - One kid was only 17!
He was supposedly under pressure since two years (must've been preparing from 11th onwards) and found it difficult to balance the prep pressure with his love for hockey!
- Parents need to look within in such cases.

(3) Kids from marginalized background - In some cases, the families had committed their everything to put their kids through MBBS coaching.
- When a child is constantly reminded of the sacrifices being made for him/her or when he sees it, it places the child under tremendous pressure.
- Failure is not even an option!
- And success has to be obtained in the first attempt because the family might not have resources to provide coaching and financial support for repeat attempts.

What we're looking at here is a social problem which was weaponized and linked to NEET cancellation. Every year before and after NEET there are spades of suicides during moths leading to the exam, and after results are declared.

Resignation of the education minister or a more robuts NEET examination process will not solve this issue. The society needs to look within.

My humble suggestions for total overhaul of examination process

1. Create 6000 CBT (Computer Based Test) centres uniformly all over the country.

2. One centre will be a 3-4 storey building with 500 computers.

3. This will cater to 30 lakh students in one shift.

4. Highest number of appearances in a govt. exam was 1.11 Cr. in RRB Group D Exam 2019, completed in 2 months and 99 shifts. With 6000 CBT centres the whole exam can be conducted in 2 days in 4 different shifts.

5. Building a centre from scratch can cost at max 16 Cr. for everything.

6. Total cost of building 6000 centres will be at max 96,000 Cr.

7. This amount can be further divided into 2 years so 1-year cost will be 48,000 Cr.

8. These centres can also be used by states so they will pay 30-40% of the amount and provide land to build them.

9. Cost of building this massive infrastructure for examination will be 0.63% of total budget of India in 2026-27 for 2 years and 24% of total Union Education budget (which is very high so govt. needs to increase Education budget or for this one-time special expenditure they can also float 10-year Education bond).

10. After this there should be a mandate for every ministry and every state to come up with their Employment Exam calendar and other Exam Calendar for the future year between 25th to 31st December. If delayed they have to explain the reason of delay on 1st January in special sitting of Parliament and state assembly.

11. When all Exam Calendars of states and all central ministries are available an Exam body will decide dates of all exams on these centres accordingly without any exam clashing with another in next 2 weeks…

12. All India Exam Calendar of 100 days with 2 shifts can cater to 60 Cr. students’ applications.

13. These centres can be used by private companies and institutions for their exams also by paying to govt.

14. 6000 centres also completely solve the problem of centre allocations to students which create logistical problems when they have to travel 1000-1500 km for one exam.
15. If 6000 centres are divided prudently then
- Urban area student needs to travel only 5-10 km from home
- Semi-urban student needs to travel only 10-15 km from their home
- Rural area students need to travel only 20-25 km
- Far-fetched rural area student needs to travel at max 30-35 km

India's "free speech activists" believe that anyone who disagrees with them should face a tank. And they mean this at scale. If you ask them if they are okay with one murder, they will say yes. If you ask them if they are okay with 2 murders, or 10 murders, they will still say yes.

If you ask them if they are okay with 20 million murders, India's "free speech activists" will still say yes, in all seriousness.

Could’ve shaped it in a more modern style but great news in any case. The future of railways has always been electric. It was visible in the 90s but the future is most definitely carbon emissions free. Indian Railways now needs to shift their energy sources from fossils to green.

India’s first hydrogen-powered train has travelled more than 1200 kilometres of seamless operations, replacing over 3000 litres of diesel consumption and emitting only water vapour as a by-product.

The hydrogen train was flagged off between Jind and Sonipat on July 17.

@RailMinIndia said that the train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. This process powers the train while producing only water vapour, with no smoke or tailpipe carbon emissions.

It stated that the project is an indigenous initiative led by Indian Railways. Following the successful operation on the Jind-Sonipat route, trials on the Delhi route will begin soon.

I was recently visiting a museum outside of Guwahati called the North East Tribal Museum and Cultural Center. Now it seems to be under the aegis of @ASIGoI and @AssamCAD and apparently the place had been shut for more than 15 years.

Another dead weight. When ASI was approached to restore one of the biggest Palace complexes of the North India, Mubarak Mandi Palace Complex at Jammu (it was built over two centuries), they replied that the work capacity ASI has is worth one cr per year. The project is estimated to be between 500 and 1000 cr. Rest we can imagine!

Now something that is less than 5 minutes away from the new and fancy Science City/Planetarium in the biggest city of the NorthEast, and something that is called the North East Museum doesn’t deserve to be abandoned and left in a dilapidated condition.

On a very serious note. Most of India's problems are supply-side issues. Demand and supply are mismatched. Unfortunately, the size of the economy and the fiscal space, coupled with political compulsions, make things slightly harder.

We need more cops, not less. We need more super-speciality doctors, not fewer. We need more public representatives (yes, we do), not fewer.

We also need to fix the urban and rural mismatch. Indian discourse is far too skewed towards rural demands. That needs to be fixed. This delimitation needs to increase urban seats.

We need more freedom, not less. Look at this current protest. People said all sorts of crazy things. We got to know the crazy ones, and now the state will deal with the super violent lot among them while the rest can sleep.

Indians need more capitalism, not socialism. Yes, the welfare state will remain and should remain in some ways. But we need data centres. We need more trains. We need more highways. We need more airports. We need more hotels. We need more material prosperity.

The problem is social media has globalised the discourse. A cat gets stuck in some random spot on the other side of the world, and a kid in Mumbai gets interested. It also creates a higher set of aspirations in this generation. My generation did not even know what happens in foreign countries. My first ever trip outside India was after the age of 18.

So the next 10 to 20 years, until we cross the 10 trillion mark and go to 7500 USD per capita, will be slightly tricky. The political class post-Modi needs to understand this reality. Modi has given you a great platform. He will be for one more term at best, or at worst, depending on your political preference.

Think about these things that I have mentioned. Obviously, what I am stating is not comprehensive. But the intention is to give you a perspective. I wish all the Gen Z and Gen Alpha happiness. But think about what I have said and think about policy solutions.
