SA NEEDS R1.9TRN TO REVIVE RAIL
South Africa’s dysfunctional rail system is costing the economy an estimated R276bn annually, equivalent to 3.6% of GDP, through lost exports and freight being pushed onto roads.
Rail transported about 150 million tonnes of freight in 2022, despite a viable market estimated at 262 million tonnes.
Reviving the network could cut the national freight bill by up to R100bn while improving exports, productivity and road congestion.
However, restoring rail as the backbone of South Africa’s logistics and passenger system could require R1.9trn.
Private investment, alongside government involvement, is expected to play a major role in rebuilding infrastructure.

The IMF guy is 38 years old. Both Lesetja and Enoch have been overseeing SA public finances since 1994, when the IMF guy was 6 years old. They are there to be told how to manage their country's finances. What a shame.
