The amendment to the Magistrates Courts Act expanding the pecuniary jurisdiction of Chief Magistrates' Courts to UGX 200 million is a significant judicial reform. However, it comes with serious operational implications that must not be ignored.
Thousands of civil cases are likely to be transferred from the High Court to Chief Magistrates' Courts across the country. This means:
• Increased case backlog and workload for Chief Magistrates and Magistrates Grade I. • More miscellaneous applications, hearings, rulings, and judgments. • Increased lawyer–magistrate engagement time and courtroom management demands. • Greater administrative burdens on court staff and clerks. • Increased pressure on court infrastructure, transport, records management, and security. • Greater public expectations for timely disposal of cases. • Increased responsibility and accountability at the lower courts.
As Government and the Judiciary implement this reform, they should also invest in the officers who will carry its weight. Salaries and facilitation for Chief Magistrates, Magistrates Grade I, and Administrative Clerks should be enhanced. Chief Magistrates should be provided with reliable official vehicles, adequate security, modern ICT tools, and sufficient support staff.
Judicial reforms should be matched with resource reforms. Otherwise, we risk transferring files without transferring the capacity needed to deliver justice efficiently.

The @ealawsociety expresses grave
concern over the reported forcible removal and apparent detention of Hon. @EriasLukwago, a Senior Advocate and member of both the @ug_lawsociety and the EALS, by Uganda military personnel.
Below is our statement calling for his immediate release.
Your member was abducted in broad daylight, and you're waiting for 11 days to take action. Then of all days you choose a Friday when most Advocates don't have matters in Court anyway. What kind of boycott is that?
Nonsense!
Why does @URSBHQ stress people over reserving non-identical company names?
I have never seen NIRA or Passport Office at Internal Affairs reject to give someone a National ID or Passport on basis of their name being similar to another person's.
The point I'm making is there are other ways of differentiating companies than just their names. Same way you differentiate people with same names
. @mkituuma "In our initial statement, there was an unintended misrepresentation suggesting that the incident had not occurred. This resulted from a communication gap in the preliminary information received from Kiwatule Police Station. We regret this shortfall and wish to provide the correct position.
The incident was duly reported at Kiwatule Police Station under Kira Road Division, and investigations were subsequently initiated under CRB 064/2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 PM in Kazinga Zone, Kiwatule Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala City.
Preliminary findings indicate that a client searching for rental property online through Jiji Uganda got in contact with Lubega Fahad (30), who allegedly presented himself as a property agent. After inspecting premises in Kyanja and agreeing on rental terms of UGX 3 million per month, the client was reportedly instructed to deposit UGX 12 million, covering three months’ rent and a security deposit, into a DTB bank account registered in the names of Lubega Fahad.
On 2 June 2026 at approximately 2:00 PM, the complainant made the payment at Metroplex Mall. Upon revisiting the property, the complainant was informed by the caretaker that the house was not available for rent but was instead being offered for sale. Efforts to reverse the transaction were unsuccessful as the funds had already been withdrawn.
The complainant was advised to formally report the matter to Police. However, he later received information that the suspect had been sighted at the bank. Upon returning, he found that the suspect had already been apprehended.
It is alleged that the suspect later escaped from the bank while under the watch of the bank security guard, prompting members of the public to pursue and assault him. Police found that the suspect had already been apprehended and appeared weak, although no visible torture marks were observed at the time.
The suspect was subsequently taken to Kiwatule Police Station for custody but passed on shortly after arrival. The body was conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examination.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding both the alleged fraud and the subsequent mob action remain ongoing.
The Uganda Police Force strongly condemns acts of mob justice and urges members of the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies for proper handling in accordance with the law.
We once again regret the earlier miscommunication and reaffirm our commitment to providing accurate, timely, and accountable information to the public.
Summons are not issued by lawyers. Summons are issued by the @JudiciaryUG . Receive the summons and ascertain which judicial officer issued them, then take them to for Swahili lessons. Otherwise you are in the basement with the wrong lawyer.
Good afternoon comrade Tony, this is a good gesture from you, especially that, it is extremely hard to find someone within the MK circle who finds the arrest of Advocate Erias Lukwago illegal but at a bear minimum as a lack of compassion.
Tony, while your good gesture is appreciated, we must also remind the good General that, true humility & fidelity to the law is when you have the power to abuse it (the law) but decide to not only respect it but also protect it, because it's a basic thing rooted in our Constitution.
I can imagine that everytime, kamanda oversteps his Authority, we must then appeal to his compassion but not the law, that's a legal absurdity!
My appeal is simple, and I am sure many Ugandans on this platform agree with me, I appeal to the good General to respect the law.
