Retired account of the 12th chair of @usachp, appointed by President Joe Biden. Worked from 2023-24 to advance & modernize federal historic preservation policy.
I look forward to seeing ACHP & its next chair continue to assert a leadership role within & outside the Fed gov’t to fulfill the goals Congress set, including by advancing common-sense permitting reforms and policies that facilitate progress & protect America’s treasured places.
It has been an incredible honor to serve in the Biden-Harris Administration and to engage more people in understanding–and harnessing–the promise and the power of our nation’s historic preservation agency. 1/3
In anticipation of the incoming Administration, ACHP @ChairBronin, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in December 2022, announced she would be stepping down from her position on the ACHP, effective tomorrow. https://t.co/55TdJs8h3Y
I want to thank fellow ACHP members for their partnership, creativity, & willingness to think beyond the status quo, and the ACHP staff, especially Executive Director Reid Nelson, for their capable execution of a large number of new initiatives. 2/3

Every American owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the Till family, Till Institute, Emmett Till Interpretive Center, & Rev. Wheeler Parker, Jr. & his wife Dr. Marvel Parker, for their courage and persistent leadership in advocating for the establishment of this Nat'l Monument.
ACHP @ChairBronin today presented the National Trust/Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Award for Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation to the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument at the PastForward Conference in New Orleans. https://t.co/5UvjSuGJQX
@POTUS We must reform our processes, including government review processes, to prioritize people. We must reorient our work to join common cause with housing advocates & environmental leaders. We must strip systemic racism from every preservation project, decision, standard, and law.

Thanks also to Ira Matt, Jamie Lee Marks, Bill Dancingfeather, Kelly Fanizzo, Javier Marqués, & Reid Nelson, among others, for helping to get this important document over the finish line.
Please publicize widely & consider how the federal gov't can expand its commitment to IK.
I'm confident it will open up additional paths for ACHP to incorporate IK into its processes, & deeply grateful to all who shaped it, including Reno Franklin, who drew from his Native Hawaiian roots to help me initiate, conceptualize, & advance this groundbreaking document. 2/
A seemingly small thing that is actually a big thing - in this case, for federal recognition of Indigenous Knowledge. The Exemption recognizes that Native Hawaiians, not the federal government, are the experts when it comes to preserving their cultural sites and practices. 1/
Heritage Ohio invited me to discuss my report, at https://t.co/gdFx3JwbMF. I was glad attendees read it, but sad their experiences bore out my findings. We must continue to work to improve application & interpretation of preservation standards across all levels of government.
ACHP @ChairBronin updated those attending the Heritage Ohio annual conference on October 16 about the state of historic preservation in the country and her report on federal historic preservation standards.
Interested in historic preservation & climate change? I discussed federal strategies to ensure that historic properties can be adapted to climate risk with Doug Parsons on his @usaadapts podcast. Listen in here!:
