The harpy eagle is one of the most powerful birds of prey on Earth, and we’re destroying the forests it needs to survive.

It’s already Critically Endangered in parts of Central America, with deforestation wiping out huge areas of its habitat. A single breeding pair can need up to 100 square kilometres of rainforest to hunt.

And they don’t reproduce quickly. They usually raise just one chick every two to three years, so when populations are wiped out, they can’t simply bounce back.

Logging, agriculture and poaching are pushing this incredible bird closer to the edge. We are destroying ancient rainforest and taking some of the world’s most spectacular wildlife with it.

It genuinely scares me how little urgency there seems to be around the climate crisis. We can put enormous value on money, markets, and economic growth, but none of that matters when people can’t reliably access something as basic as water. I keep hearing this as though adaptation is some magic answer to climate change. Yes, we can build higher sea walls, develop crops that cope with drought, move infrastructure and change how we live. But then the climate keeps changing. The sea rises higher. The heat gets worse. Droughts get longer. Crops fail. Infrastructure gets pushed beyond its limits.

So we adapt again. And again. And again.

There comes a point where you simply can’t adapt fast enough, cheaply enough, or at all.

Adaptation is essential. We absolutely need to prepare for the climate we’ve already changed. But it cannot replace cutting emissions. Because if we keep making the problem worse, eventually there is nowhere left to adapt to.
