When you turn on a light in your house, turbines can feel it!

I definitely disagree with Peter here.

Clinton and Bush did not fail just because China is... mean. They failed because they were not ready to be equally... mean.

I am not saying here that I believe the MAGA view that Trump is a genius. I am just saying that if you approach China with national interests on your mind (not your corporate donor interests) and you speak to them firmly and authoritatively and look for WIN-WIN outcomes that are supported with CLEAR carrots and CLEAR sticks... then yes, this COULD work.

Just because previous administrations failed does not make the policy a mistake. Globalization is not inherently right or wrong. It depends on EXECUTION. As so many other things do.

Other Trump tariff options;

Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 — Allows the president to impose tariffs (no rate cap, indefinite duration) if imports threaten national security. Requires a Commerce Department investigation (up to 270 days) with findings that imports impair security. Typically sector-specific (e.g., steel, aluminum, autos) rather than country-wide

Section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974 — Authorizes tariffs (up to 50% above existing rates, initial duration up to 4 years extendable to 8) if surging imports cause or threaten serious injury to a domestic industry. Requires an International Trade Commission (ITC) investigation (up to 180 days), public hearings, and comments. Industry-focused rather than broad or country-specific.

Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 — Permits tariffs (no rate cap) in response to unfair, discriminatory, or unjustifiable foreign trade practices that burden U.S. commerce or violate trade agreements. Requires a U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) investigation, consultations with the foreign government, and public input. Country-specific or targeted; actions expire after 4 years unless extended.

Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 — Enables temporary tariffs (up to 15% ad valorem, max 150 days) to address large U.S. balance-of-payments deficits or related international payments issues. No prior agency investigation required; extension needs congressional approval. Never used historically.

Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 (Smoot-Hawley) — Allows tariffs (up to 50%) on goods from countries imposing discriminatory or unreasonable restrictions on U.S. commerce. No agency investigation required; president makes findings directly. Never used for tariffs and could face legal challenges.

And let me add that “because taxes” is an extension of “because markets.”
