Today in #Sikh History:
Ranjit Singh was crowned the Maharaja of Panjab. The ceremony was conducted by Baba Sahib Singh Bedi. This created a unified political state known as the Sarkar-i-Khalsa. Ranjit Singh refused any emblems of royalty for the ceremony and wished to be referred to only as Sarkar-i-Wallah or Singh Sahib. He struck coins in the names of the Sikh Gurus. This state would be a golden period for Sikh arts and literature and would be one of the longest periods of peace and freedom that Panjab has known.

#KhalsaAid's #PlantingMemories Project has planted 4000 trees in various Refugee Camps in Iraq, in memory of those killed during the #Yazidi Genocide. These trees have helped revitalise the camps for the Yazidi community & are a poignant reminder of their loved ones.

Today is my brother’s birthday.
I won’t be able to speak to him today, so I am sharing my message to him here with you instead.
If you don’t know anything about my brother’s story, I’ll tell you one thing. It’s a story of great injustice.

Today in #Sikh History:
In 1955, the Indian government passed a law that made it illegal even to raise slogans supporting a Panjabi-speaking state. Uttering the words "Panjabi Suba Zindabad" became a criminal offense. Five years later, on this day in 1960, in the city of Karnal (then in Panjab, now in Haryana), a 12-year-old fifth-grade student named Inderjit Singh was walking home from school while chanting slogans of "Panjabi Suba Zindabad" and "Bole So Nihal Sat Sri Akal."
He crossed paths with police officers who ordered him to stop chanting. However, Inderjit Singh, asserting that he was a son of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and fearless of anyone, refused to comply. The police officers then beat him with their lathis (sticks), causing his arm to dislocate. Subsequently, they threw him into a well, resulting in his tragic drowning. Kaka Inderjit Singh is revered as the first Shahid (martyr) of the Panjabi Suba Movement.

In the first pauri of Thiti, Guru Arjan Sahib advises that the being should give up superstition and always contemplate the virtues of IkOankar (the Divine). Only by taking the refuge of and singing the praises of IkOankar, can the being be liberated and content.

The @SGPCAmritsar led a protest march in Amritsar against the detention & arrest of innocent Sikh youths as the government suppresses civil liberties in Punjab. A memorandum was provided to the Amritsar DC for CM @BhagwantMann.
The memorandum demanded the immediate release of youth and to revoke the NSA imposed on detainees. It also criticised Mann's attacks on the Jathedar of the Akal Takht, which is the temporal seat of authority for Sikhs.
