🌊 Most people think naval warfare is just battleships and submarines. In reality, it’s also about protecting the systems the world depends on, such as the internet, food supplies, oil shipments, and humanitarian aid, among others.
In this video, @CDroegeICRC, ICRC's chief legal officer, explains more about how naval blockades, neutral waters, and freedom of navigation are all governed by strict legal rules designed to limit human suffering👇🏽
Ensuring respect for IHL through prevention & preparedness — a key topic at the IHL conference “Beyond the Image of Humanity”, organized by @RedCrossRomania, which also celebrated its 150th anniversary with a photo exhibition and the Romanian re-edition of “A Memory of Solferino”
An important event at the Polish MFA : our Chief legal adviser @CDroegeICRC briefed ministries on IHL, the current challenges, and the prevention work needed to uphold the norms and values which are fundamental to our humanity
Thank you @MSZ_RP for your invitation to brief Polish ministries about @ICRC work and mandate. I underlined the need for sustained investment in international humanitarian law and prevention work today to ensure compliance in the future. Because even wars have limits. #IHL
Motherhood in times of armed conflict carries extraordinary burdens.
On this International Mother’s Day, let’s once again stress that civilians must always be protected.
For many mothers, war forces them to carry far more than they ever should.
Daily life becomes a constant effort to care for children and make difficult decisions through fear and uncertainty.
Civilians must be protected, always. #MothersDay
A beautiful Red Cross Red Crescent day celebrated today in Chisinau. Congratulations to the Moldovan Red Cross & the volunteers at the forefront of humanitarian action ! In Moldova, in the world, in wars and crises, with all people we serve, we are united in Humanity.
Protecting civilians in armed conflict remains an obligation for all parties under international humanitarian law (IHL).
Mirjana Spoljaric, ICRC president, tells @BeckyCNN, after a recent visit to Iran.
"We owe an immense debt to our colleagues in conflict zones who continue to serve those in need despite the risks. Their courage is extraordinary - but courage does not deflect bullets". https://t.co/K9wzZYSwYV
Attacks on critical infrastructure are not only about what is destroyed, but also about the people left without what they need to live.
Even wars have limits.
They must be respected.
At a time when wars are raging and tensions are rising, we must uphold International humanitarian law and the vision of a mine free world #MineAwarenessDay
Do international treaties banning weapons matter? Where would we be without them? As globally agreed limits on wars are questioned, @etollefsenicrc, head of ICRC's weapon contamination unit, shares more 👇🏽

We are heartbroken. Ibrahim Eid and Ahmad Abu Hilal were our dear and courageous colleagues. Our prayers and condolences go to their families, friends and colleagues. Their killing illustrates the intolerable, unbearable civilian death toll in Gaza. This must end, immediately.
On World Red Cross Red Crescent day, ICRC joined SLRCS & IFRC to appreciate outstanding volunteers from across Sri Lanka. Their selfless efforts and commitment help us preserve humanity. @SLRedCross@IFRCAsiaPacific@ICRC#RCRCday
For 160+ years, the Red Cross and Red Crescent has brought hope and help in humanity’s hardest moments. Today, we honor the courage of those who serve — and remember those we’ve lost along the way. #RedCrossDay#RedCrescentDay
The deaths of our colleagues demand more than empty words of outrage: they demand action.
The international community cannot keep looking away as the rules of war are ignored, and humanitarian workers deliberately targeted while trying to save lives.
