On this topic, I really like what Space Marines do with helmets and optics

SM helmets provide a HUD and feed info, help with aim etc

But there's limits to their features and so target finders, telescopic lenses, infrared emitters to ensure NVG function amongst others all have to be tagged on, and these features have a noticeable impact on the helmet's appearance.

All of these can allow you to infer about a space marine's role, veterancy, chapter culture or personal preferences/worries

Modern designs will just give helmet 2 bright lenses and tell you that all of these functions are built in.

And that works just fine, but I much prefer this approach.
