The meteoric rise of MP Jo White in the political firmament.

Jo White has been the MP for Bassetlaw (north Nottinghamshire) since 2024. Her husband - Lord John Mann - was the Bassetlaw MP from 2001-2019. During that time Jo White was employed as her husband’s office manager. She is now the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Migration and Citizenship as well as a Vice Chair in the lobby organisation Labour Friends of Israel.

The @MPFolio and @TheyWorkForYou databases show that Jo White has received £71,292.03 in donations and gifts including the following:

£50,000 (£32,000 and £18,000) from the ‘cross party think tank’ Palace Yard Events. The CEO of Palace Yard is former NE Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel.

£5,000 from the Director of Israel tech firm Hetz Ventures Stuart Roden.

£8,350 from Sir Trevor Chinn.

£2,000 from the billionaire Chairperson of the Pentland Group Stephen Rubin.

£3,114 from City trader Michael Bullen.

£2,000 from the Sir Trevor Pears of The Pears Foundation.

£700 in tickets & hospitality from the @FootballAssoc for the Charity Shield. ⚽️

£750 in tickets & hospitality from @wembleystadium for the FA Cup Final. ⚽️

However, the @ElectoralCommUK home donations page tells a different story and one I can’t quite get my head around. Enter Jo White’s name and it shows that she’s received £335,294.82 in donations over many years (running parallel to her husband’s period as an MP). Her recent donations are listed but then there’s a whole raft of entries from some curiously-named donors: Sir John White, Mr John L. Whiter and Mr Jonathan P. White. Has the @ElectoralCommUK got Labour’s Jo White mixed up with another Jo White or is there something else at play? Indeed, is Jo White whiter than white?
