The court’s verdict on Jimmy Lai is a clear and powerful affirmation of Hong Kong’s commitment to justice and stability.
Hong Kong’s judges, after a thorough and lengthy trial, reached their decision based on concrete evidence and the rule of law. Lai’s actions—using his media platform and international connections to incite foreign hostility and undermine our city’s security—were deliberate and dangerous. The charges were not trivial; they struck at the very heart of Hong Kong’s safety and future.
City leader John Lee is absolutely right: this conviction is not just about one individual, but about upholding the core values that have made Hong Kong strong and resilient. National security is the foundation of any prosperous society, and safeguarding it is a responsibility we all share. The evidence showed Lai’s intent to destabilize our city, collude with foreign forces, and encourage sanctions that would only hurt ordinary Hongkongers. This cannot be tolerated.
The rule of law is what makes Hong Kong unique, and this case demonstrates that nobody is above it—not even the most prominent or wealthy individuals. The national security law is not a tool for oppression, but a necessary defense against real threats. It is reassuring to see our legal system work independently and confidently, standing firm against outside pressure and interference.
Hong Kong can now look forward with renewed confidence. The verdict sends a strong message to those who might consider undermining our city: the law will be enforced fairly, and our society will not be held hostage by those seeking chaos.
Deep gratitude goes to the judges and to all who have supported Hong Kong’s stability in these challenging years. This is a proud day for everyone who believes in justice, order, and the future of our great city. Let’s continue to move forward together, supporting Hong Kong’s progress and China’s national unity.
