When Toni Morrison said, “In this country American means white. Everybody else has to hyphenate,” she was pointing to something much larger than the words people use to describe themselves. For much of American history, whiteness was treated as the default American identity, while other groups were routinely identified by an additional racial or ethnic label. Black Americans could be called African American, Japanese Americans were distinguished as Japanese American, and Mexican Americans as Mexican American, while a white person could often simply be described as “American.” Morrison was questioning who gets to represent the nation without explanation and whose identity is treated as something that needs to be qualified.

That question ran throughout much of Morrison’s work. Through novels such as Beloved, Song of Solomon and The Bluest Eye, she placed Black life, memory, family, beauty and historical trauma at the center rather than treating them as subjects existing on the margins of an American story. In 1993, she became the first Black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, but her influence reaches far beyond that achievement. Morrison challenged readers to think about how race shapes language, belonging and even our understanding of who is considered fully American. More than three decades after she made this observation, the quote still raises a powerful question: when we hear the word “American,” who do we instinctively picture?

Nigeria: The body of Pastor Hills Emmanuel, who was abducted yesterday, was found today in Plateau State.

He and another pastor, Gabriel Joseph Dipak, were kidnapped by Fulani Muslims while traveling from Jos to Bokkos.

The Fulani reportedly abducted them by setting up a roadblock less than a mile from military checkpoints.

That same night, Fulani Muslims carried out four other separate attacks against Christians, all within 20 miles – at least three other believers were killed.

The Fulani Muslims are now trying to extort the family of Pastor Dipak with ransom demands.

A war is being carried out against the Christians of Nigeria's Middle Belt - it is past time for them to be defended.

Pray for these suffering families - they and their communities need immediate help.

Here’s what is another argument as to why I can’t be Muslim ever again:

The Samaritans hated the Jews. Actual blood-feud, wouldn’t-eat-together, centuries-deep hatred. John 4 says it plainly: Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

Hold that in your head.

Because the Samaritans kept their OWN Torah. Separate community, separate priesthood, separate mountain, copied it themselves for over two thousand years, and they’d have paid money to catch the Jews forging scripture. That’s your hostile witness. That’s the enemy’s copy.

What finally broke me wasn’t a contradiction in the Quran. It was a prayer from the cross.

I could have argued forever. Every forensic point has a counter-argument someone will attempt; every debate can be dragged out.

But there was one thing I could not argue with.

A God, being tortured to death by the people He created, looking down at them and saying:

“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34.

I had spent years defending a God too majestic to suffer, too proud to bleed. 

And here was a God, murdered by His enemies, praying for their forgiveness with His last breaths. I had no category for that. My theology had no room for it.

You can out-argue a man. You cannot out-love a God like that.

“God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8.

The forensics opened my mind.

That prayer from the cross broke my heart.

I wasn’t reasoned into the kingdom, in the end.

I was loved into it, by a God who prayed for me while I was still His enemy, still fighting Him, still sure I was right.

That’s the love that won me.

The police in Burlington, North Carolina told this mother if she continues to pursue answers in her sons case. They will arrest her !

Alecia Eubanks took to social media asking for help . Her son, Aamari “Shawn” Eubanks, has been missing since December 2024. What was supposed to be a quick trip to pickup his grandmother’s mail has turned into almost two years of unanswered questions .

The vehicle Shawn had driven that day to pick up his grandmothers mail was found off Sharpe Road in a wooded area the next day. The vehicle’s windows had been busted out and there was blood in and around . Police say that there were signs of a violent altercation . But still Shawn has never been located and nobody has ever been held responsible . This mother just wants help in bringing home her child .

A mother just walked out of a North Carolina police department and said this:

Her son, Aamari “Shawn” Eubanks, vanished Dec. 4, 2024 on a short drive to pick up his grandmother’s mail.

The next day they found the car in the woods. Window smashed. Blood everywhere. No Shawn.

She says 20 months later:

• The detective forwards calls her to voicemail

• The SBI agent on the case is a former Burlington officer who won’t call her back

• They told her if she keeps looking into it, they’ll arrest her and that he isn’t even entered in THEIR missing persons database.

A blood-soaked car is not a closed case. A mother asking where her son is. This is not a crime.
