Russia launched a massive attack with ballistic missiles on Kyiv and across Ukraine last night, destroying homes and killing innocent civilians. Moscow once more turns desperation into intimidation and indiscriminate killing. We need to adopt the 21st sanctions package as soon as possible.

The Day of International Criminal Justice commemorates the historic adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The ICC is a cornerstone of the international criminal justice system. It acts when national autorities are unable or unwilling to investigate and prosecute international crimes, ensuring accountability when other paths to justice are blocked.

Sweden and the EU remain steadfast in their support of the ICC's independence, integrity and impartiality. The Court and its officials must be able to carry out its mandate free from pressure, intimidation or interference.

The EU today adopted its largest cyber sanctions package ever and exposed malicious actors within the Russian cyber ecosystem, including the FSB. Sweden and the EU will continue to deter and respond to Russia’s threats to the EU and its Member states.

The IOC's decision on Russia's future participation in the Olympics is deplorable. The organisation is wilfully turning a blind eye to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and intensified Russian attacks on civilian targets. This is the time to increase pressure on Russia, not to make excuses for its war.

Grateful to Sweden for the important decision to officially use Kyjiv/Kyiv instead of Kiev, Odesa instead of Odessa, and Donbas instead of Donbass in Swedish-language communications.

“Names are not just words – they carry history, identity and self-determination,” Swedish Foreign Minister @MariaStenergard has commented.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister @andrii_sybiha thanked Sweden for this meaningful step that shows respect for Ukraine’s history and sovereignty.

“​​It is only logical that Ukrainian cities should have Ukrainian names instead of the Russian-derived versions imposed through centuries of imperial domination,” he stressed.

Western leaders are asking the wrong question about Russia. It is not how to negotiate with the Kremlin or deter a future attack, but how to ensure Moscow is defeated in its war against Ukraine so that aggression no longer appears to be a viable strategy.

A just and lasting peace in Europe will not be built on fear of Russia's defeat, but on the understanding that aggression must end in defeat. We should not fear Russia's defeat. We should fear a world in which Russia comes to believe that it cannot lose.

On Monday, the EU can finally open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova.

Sweden will continue to work for the opening of all negotiations clusters for both Ukraine and Moldova without delay, in line with the Commission’s assessment.

Many countries are now knocking on the EU’s door. They want to be part of a free Europe and the world’s largest single market. It is in our interest to help the candidate countries make progress towards joining the Union.
