@vinnylnelson The fact that students test scores are looked at to predict the number of prisons that will be built shows the opinions held. Before students even have a chance people have decided their future. With that mindset, punishment & control lead decision making.
@vinnylnelson Unfortunately I don’t think they are places of liberation. I think they are a microcosm of what is going on in society. They are all too often places that continue to silence, not give voice.
@vinnylnelson I think one thing that is very clear to me from what I have seen and experienced at my school this year is the role that wealth plays. Those that have the means have access to continue....weekly testing, smaller classes
@vinnylnelson But if the function and purpose of policy is to improve. If we continue to create policy that only help a select few....we are continuing to benefit privilege and look past others.
@vinnylnelson How powerful would it be for students to take the lead and help organize/plan something. Have them meet with people in the community and work together.
@vinnylnelson Educators have to take the time to know and understand their students. The have to look at each incident as a separate incident. A child’s past should not cloud/influence the present.
@vinnylnelson I think we have to. I think that this should be part of teacher ed prog as well as a component of mentoring programs. This is especially true for white teachers. They have to be aware of their privilege and how it is reflected in their teaching.
@MarjaNicoleM@vinnylnelson I agree @MarjaNicoleM I also think that the community/neighborhood of the school need to be part of the talk. They are critical components of the school and are too often not thought of.
