Preparations are in high gear at the Port of Lamu ahead of tomorrow’s groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the ksh2.2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery; a project that will significantly enhance the region’s petroleum refining capacity and infrastructure.
Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport @davis_chirchir accompanied by Principal Secretary, State Department for Transport, @mohamed_daghar , earlier conducted an inspection tour at the port and expressed satisfaction with the preparations ahead of the ceremony, which will be presided over by President William Ruto with several Heads of State expected to attend.
Even as the preparations are ongoing, the Port of Lamu remains operational with the heavy lift gang currently discharging 2,930 metric tonnes of heavy construction machinery from the vessel MV Da Yang to be used in the project.
The facility is designed to process crude oil from the Lokichar fields in Turkana County, as well as crude sourced from other parts of East and Southern Africa and beyond.
With a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the Dangote East Africa Refinery will be one of the largest refineries in East Africa.
Upon completion of the project, the refinery will supply refined petroleum products to markets across the region, strengthening East Africa’s energy and petroleum supply infrastructure.
Once you learn how to shop directly from China, E.g Temù or shien your wardrobe changes completely. Call me cheap I don't care I ain't rich, I don't do fraud.😭
It's knowing what to search for.
Here's my style after making plenty of mistakes.
1. T-shirts:
Skip 100% polyester unless you're buying gym wear.
Instead, search:
• 100% Cotton
• Combed Cotton
• Heavyweight Cotton
• 240-300 GSM Cotton
• Premium Cotton
• Mercerized Cotton
The heavier the GSM, the thicker and more premium the shirt usually feels.
2. Jeans:
Denim Jeans
Temu is surprisingly good for denim if you know what to search.
Search:
• Denim Jeans
• Cotton Denim
• Raw Denim
• Selvedge Denim (if available)
• 98% Cotton + 2% Elastane
• 99% Cotton
Avoid jeans with high polyester content. The more cotton, the better they'll age and feel.
3. Body-hug clothing:
Search:
• Ribbed Knit
• Modal
• Viscose Blend
• Cotton-Spandex Blend
They hold their shape much better than cheap polyester.
4. Hoodies
Search:
• 400 GSM
• French Terry
• Cotton Fleece
• Heavyweight Hoodie
5. Chains
Search:
• 316L Stainless Steel
• Titanium Steel
• PVD Gold Plated
• Vacuum Plated
These are far more resistant to fading than ordinary fashion jewelry.
6. Earrings
Search:
• 925 Sterling Silver
• 316L Stainless Steel
• Hypoallergenic
• Moissanite (if you're buying stones)
7. Scarves
Search:
• Mulberry Silk
• Silk Blend
• Cashmere Blend
• Wool Blend
• Viscose
Avoid the shiny, thin polyester scarves if you're after a premium look.
8. Loafers
Search:
• Genuine Leather
• Cow Leather
• Full Grain Leather (rare but worth looking for)
• Rubber Outsole
9. Sneakers
Search:
• Rubber Outsole
• EVA Midsole
• Breathable Mesh
• Leather Upper
• Stitched Sole
Pictures lie a lot
The description usually tells the truth.
Here's how I shop:
1. Read the material composition before anything else.
2. Sort by Most Orders or Best Selling, not cheapest.
3. Only buy products with lots of reviews or pictures or even better when a Nigerian has purchased it before they always tell the truth.
4. Read the 1-star reviews first. They'll tell you what the seller won't.
5. Look at customer photos, not the product photos.
6. Check the weight of the product. Better quality clothing is often heavier.
7. Read the size chart. Don't assume your Nigerian size matches.
8. If the title has words like "luxury," "premium," or "designer" but the material is 100% polyester, not everything but still move on.
Your best friend isn't the product picture.
It's the material, the reviews, and the customer photos.
That's how you separate the gems from the junk.
I hope this help.
Things are to expensive for a country this poor.

Unfortunately, I have to admit that I have not done my best. My current situation is a direct consequence of my incompetence. I suck at doing this life thing.
In a historic feat, the Port of Lamu on Sunday evening welcomed the largest vessel ever to dock at any Port in East and Central Africa.
The MV Baltimore Express, a colossal, measuring 369 meters in length overall, arrived from Oman’s Salalah Port.
To put that size into perspective, the ship spans nearly the length of three football pitches with 69 meters to spare. Many regional ports would struggle to accommodate such a giant, but Lamu stood up to the challenge.
With the port’s quay length of 400 meters per berth, MV Baltimore Express docked smoothly without any incident.
The vessel operated by German shipping line Hapag-Lloyd, during her stay in Lamu handled restows of dangerous cargo by repositioning the DGs aboard the vessel in compliance to the International Maritime Organization.
This call follows the earlier record set by a sister vessel MV Nagoya Express, a 335-meter container ship which docked at the Port of Lamu in August 2025.
KPA’s General Manager Port of Lamu Capt. Abdulaziz Mzee welcomed the ship, noting the port’s proven ability to handle ultra-large vessels.
“This call lifts Lamu’s profile on the global maritime map, and compares to some of the world’s most developed ports like Singapore, Rotterdam and Hamburg,” said the GM.
What sets the Port of Lamu apart from other regional ports is its naturally deep harbor of 17.5 meters. This depth allows Panamax and post-Panamax ships to sail into the channel with minimal or no dredging. Many other African ports require constant dredging to deepen seabeds enough to accommodate mega ships and stay competitive.
This natural advantage enables Lamu to rival the world’s most modern ports, positioning it not only as a transshipment gateway but also as a strategic hub capable of handling very high cargo volumes.
Lamu has so far handled over 120 vessels since the start of the year, with more expected to call in the coming days. To complement this growth KPA is investing in modern equipment with the port expected to receive new cranes, terminal tractors and other cargo handling equipment in the course of the year.
Equally Captain Aziz confirmed that ninety motor vehicles out of 5000 which had been discharged in March have already been evacuated from the port.
As the global shipping industry evolves and ships continue to grow, the Port of Lamu stands uniquely ready. It is built for the future, not catching up to it.

All your problems are your own fault. Lack of discipline. No confidence. No courage. No responsibility. Bad decisions. Stop complaining and change now.
