WILL THE BELL REALLY TOLL FOR ANTISEMITES?

Today’s Australian raises an uncomfortable question about the Royal Commission into antisemitism: will it confront the failures that allowed antisemitism to escalate in Australia before the Bondi massacre?

My concern is not whether I personally give evidence. It is whether the Commission answers the hard questions.

For years, I have pursued legal proceedings concerning conduct at anti-Israel protests and, critically, the failure of authorities to enforce existing laws.

The Royal Commission considered my material sufficiently relevant to issue me with a formal Notice to Produce. I provided extensive documents and was repeatedly advised that a witness statement was being prepared and would be received into evidence.

That witness statement was never finalised.

As The Australian reports today, I am concerned that important evidence concerning failures in protest policing and enforcement may therefore never properly form part of the Commission’s public evidentiary record.

Australia does not need a Royal Commission simply to document that antisemitism became worse.

It needs to explain how and why it was allowed to happen — including what governments and police knew, why existing laws were not enforced, and whether those failures contributed to the environment preceding Bondi.

The Commission is working to a tight timetable. That makes answering those questions more important, not less.

If the hardest questions are left unanswered, Australians will be entitled to ask whether this has become a Clayton’s inquiry — an inquiry in name, but not in substance.
