I don't read the ads and I don't share their politics. Once again, I will now return this account to its previous semi-mothballed status. #NotEndorsingMusk#StillNotEndorsingMusk
Chess is good for you.
Once you have learned the basic moves, practicing the game fosters imagination and different styles of problem solving.
If you choose to play competitively, it will also teach you patience, sportsmanship and staying calm under pressure.
:-) :-) :-)
If I had to learn chess from scratch here’s what I’d do
Day 1: Learn how the pieces move there’s tutorials on every chess website and on YouTube. Test it out with a low level bot on a website (Martin) just to get a feel for the rules
Days 2-10: play bots, watch a few chess games (on whichever platform you’d like), start doing low level puzzles. Learn tactics like forks, pins, back rank mates etc
Days 11-30: start playing yourself. For now stick to rapid (15 minute games is a sweet spot) Analyze EVERY game you play, learn how engines work and how you can use them to pick up on what you did wrong
Days 31-40: Grind puzzles, continue to play rapid, learn 2-3 moves in each line (After e4 as black after d4 as black, and either e4 or d4 as white) do not study a lot of theory just learn basic opening principles. If you absolutely INSIST on learning an opening learn scotch as white.
Days 41-60: Play a classical game if you can, analyze this heavily. Continue with puzzles, start analyzing master games. Your analysis will be surface level that’s ok
Days 60-90: enter a tournament, analyze your games. Start working on more difficult puzzles. Set these up with a real board and give yourself ten minutes to solve it. Teach your brain how to think deeply and not get lazy.
@fmeikle@StuartMaconie@BBCRadio4 The most recent incarnation of the Starling - the Synch Karaoke Bar - is now closed, and up for sale by the freeholder (large amounts of unpaid rent by the tenant). There is a small local campaign to buy it for the community and any support/interest would be gratefully received.
To play a Blackburne with success you need to know something about the Caro-Kann Defence, if White refuses your gambit.
This is the 1895 stem game by the British maestro: https://t.co/0FixSkpF0V, while a "plausible" Stockfish v Stockfish line ends in a 41 move draw (see gif).
I have recently been studying the Blackburne Gambit in the Scandinavian/Centre Counter Defence.
1. e4 d5 2. exd5 c6!?
Statistically, it has a poor score, but engines often prefer it to many ‘fan favourites’ including the Latvian
(1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5!?)

@SChevannes Hi Sabrina. I tried to donate to your Gofundme page, but my name has disappeared from your donors list and my card has not been debited? Any idea why this is so?
I have left US Chess and will no longer serve as director of US Chess Women, a program I started four years ago.
Resignation letter on why I cannot in good conscience lend my credibility to the org anymore.

The Polish Opening is out of fashion because it seems that 1. b4 e5 2. Bb2 Bxb4 guarantees Black a slight edge.
Which means that amusing lines such as the Tartakower Gambit (1. b4 e5 2. Bb2 f6 3. e4 Bxb4 4. Bc4 Nc6 5. f4) are rarely seen in modern chess. #Chess#LetsTalkGambits
Once again there has been a short outburst of activity on this account (September 2023). However, it will now return to its previous semi-mothballed status. #NotEndorsingMusk#StillNotEndorsingMusk
@SChevannes Dear Sabrina, I was very sorry to hear about your dreadful experience. I know that you are very strong person, which is why you have survived and gone forward, but it should never have happened in the first place. #Chess#StandwithSabrina
