I had begun to view NY resolutions as a rebound - a desperate attempt to feel good against the regrets of the previous year - much like ‘Agla sem phodenge’ (Next semester, I’ll ace it!) after battling through a bad attempt for end-sem exams.
@hyenr_energy My electricity bill is ~Rs. 2000/month in Bangalore city. How many solar panels do I need to install, and what would be the cost, with this subsidy?
This is important.
Question: Has our open, porous border increased, decreased or kept the same, the risk of foreign combatants infiltrating our country illegally to plan and execute something again America?
Had we had a proper border defense would this risk be higher, lower or the same?
Why was the wall a bad idea? Because of the messenger?!

Social media as an ethical persuader: this is the angle missed in thread. Though they might not be actively being in business of persuasion, companies have built products to increase engagement which limit people from getting full/balanced view.

Talking about ethical persuasion, Tristan Harris says that smartphones are the most powerful social persuasion machines ever build. As we hold people responsible, we should hold tech and the social media companies responsible too...

Ethics of social media🧵
Most agree that social media has created lots of value for users and society at large. And since companies themselves are making money, it’s a utilitarian gold mine. When did the products become unethical and which ethical rule has been broken?

Specific instances of defects like Cambridge Analytics are plain crimes by few individuals, so I'd say a case of bad apples causing far-reaching harm because the barrels (tech monopolies) are simply too powerful.

@Muralinandan15 Fair point. If suicide is considered ethical, formalism would probably agree to euthanasia as well. Formalism, in this sense builds on the underlying culture of society.
Would cannibalism be formalistically ethical in cultures of tribes who practice it?

Euthanasia is one long standing debate I’ve always been curious about from a legal standpoint. Looking through the lens of ethical theory, I realise it may be ethical from a ‘utilitarian’ standpoint, but always unethical from a formalistic one.
Which side do you lean?

@joe_s_nangani Voluntary euthanasia is frowned upon by Kantian philosophers because it's an implicit extension of suicide and/or murder. The underlying condition of the patient in question is not considered by formalism.
I would argue that utility of being carnivorous was much higher when homo-sapiens began hunting. With advancement in food production, storage & transport, and with the industrialisation of the meat industry, have the tables turned giving rise to the vegan movement?
