As members of our community mourn the killing of Kai Sorem by Philippine forces, the U.S. government must ensure a credible and independent investigation is conducted. I await the initial report from the Philippine Commission on Human Rights and will work to ensure there is accountability for any wrongdoing.
Beware leaders who justify murdering civilians by calling them terrorists. Just as the Trump administration does in the U.S. when confronted with resistance to their fascist, authoritarian agenda, the President of the Philippines is justifying the murder of 19 unarmed land activists, researchers, and farmers — including 2 Americans — by framing them as "terrorists."
I join the global community demanding an investigation into the murders by the Philippines troops. There must be accountability.
