Widespread anger in Iraq, following the drop of the Iraqi dinar on the black market to 1,850 for $1 (about a 15% drop in value in one day), after the Iraqi government decided to devalue the dinar. This immediately led to a rise in prices of even the most basic goods, because Iraq produces very little other than oil and is highly reliant on imports.

The gov't decision stems from Iraq's growing economic difficulties owing to Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on tankers in the Basra Port. The devaluation gives the Iraqi government more dinars for its expenditures (mostly the payment of salaries to the over-bloated public sector & social benefits, jobs & benefits that are distributed based on clientelistic considerations and not qualifications or needs) for each dollar of oil revenue.

As a result of the closure of Hormuz, Iraq has relied on shipping heavy fuel oil by trucks via Syria (initially amounting to less than 0.5% of Iraq's total monthly energy volume pre-war & rising to ~5.5%), and selling oil at great discounts to the Abu Dhabi oil company (ADNOC) and others to ship oil through the Omani route in Hormuz. In the video, an Iraqi activist in Basra describes the rising prices of basic goods yesterday and his movement of the arm mocks supporters of the Iranian axis who would record themselves making this movement to signal their support of Iranian missile attacks.

IRAN’S COUNTERFEIT IRAQI DINARS: A FINANCIAL LIFELINE HELPING TEHRAN EVADE U.S. SANCTIONS

The Iraqi dinar has fallen sharply against the U.S. dollar, with the exchange rate jumping from 150,000 to 185,000 dinars per $100—an increase of more than 23% in the cost of dollars!

Some may blame declining Iraqi oil exports following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. But Iraq holds substantial U.S. dollar reserves at @cbiraq, and I believe a far more dangerous factor is behind this decline.

According to my sources, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been systematically counterfeiting Iraqi dinars, allegedly producing up to 50 trillion dinars, equivalent to roughly $33 billion at the earlier exchange rate. The alleged objective is to smuggle these counterfeit notes into Iraq and use them to purchase U.S. dollars.

My sources say @IraqiGovt is aware of this operation, and that the chairman of Parliament’s Finance Committee has acknowledged the issue on television. There are also serious allegations that some of the printing is taking place inside Jurf al-Sakhar, a heavily restricted area southwest of Baghdad controlled by Iran-backed militias.

These allegations demand urgent U.S. attention and a thorough investigation. Washington must intensify scrutiny of Iraqi currency transactions and press Baghdad to secure its currency, including considering the replacement of compromised banknotes and stronger measures to detect counterfeiting and prevent dollar smuggling.

This operation represents a major financial lifeline for the regime in Tehran. Failure to act swiftly and decisively could allow Iraq’s dollar market to keep the mullahs afloat!
