They told the world it was about raising standards.
In reality, it was one of the most successful hostile takeovers in the history of healing.

In the early 20th century, if you walked into a pharmacy, you would find traditional herbal tinctures, homeopathic remedies, and even early electromagnetic health devices sitting right alongside conventional patented medicines.
That world was about to change forever.
In the 1910s, the Flexner Report — officially the Carnegie Foundation Bulletin No. 4 — was published. Its author, Abraham Flexner, was not a doctor or a medical scientist.
He was an educator hired by the Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations to rewrite the rules of medical education in America.
Before the report, medicine in the United States was decentralized. Twice as many physicians practiced some form of alternative medicine than conventional medicine.
Medical knowledge was taught in hundreds of small, independent schools across the country.
These schools trained doctors in homeopathy, botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, and nutrition — approaches that had evolved over centuries.
After the Flexner Report, everything shifted.
Small medical schools were either shut down or forced to merge into large universities.
Any approach that wasn’t based on pharmaceutical intervention or surgery was labeled unscientific quackery.
In roughly a decade, the number of medical schools in the United States dropped dramatically.
New schools could no longer be created without government approval.
Medicine became standardized, centralized, and corporatized. Pharmacology was declared the only legitimate solution to disease.
Why?
Around the same time, it was discovered that drugs could be synthesized from petroleum. John D. Rockefeller, whose company controlled the vast majority of American oil production, had a massive problem: for every gallon of kerosene sold, his refineries produced chemical waste byproducts with no commercial use.
He had been paying to dispose of them.
Then came the solution.
These petroleum-derived chemicals — particularly coal tar derivatives previously used to make synthetic dyes — could be turned into pharmaceutical compounds.
In 1907, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research began collaborating on this work.
The result was a new model: synthetic drugs that could be patented and sold at scale.
But for this model to dominate, the competition had to be eliminated.
Flexner’s report condemned schools teaching homeopathy, naturopathy, eclectic medicine, and any non-pharmaceutical approach.
By 1930, medical education, accreditation, and licensing across the United States had been fully centralized. State licensing boards excluded graduates from non-pharmaceutical schools. Homeopathy, which had 22 schools in 1900, was reduced to just two by 1923.
Ironically, Rockefeller himself lived to 97 and used homeopathy throughout his life.
His personal physician for 40 years was a homeopath — the same system the British royal family has used for generations.
Only the schools that accepted Rockefeller funding survived.
The vertical integration was complete: Rockefeller oil supplied the raw materials, Flexner’s new educational system created the demand, and pharmacology became the only approved path forward.
The human body was no longer seen as a self-healing, holistic system of balance and regeneration.
It was reframed as a machine that required chemical intervention to manage symptoms.
Disease, and even consciousness itself, was reduced to purely material interactions.
This wasn’t just a reform.
It was the moment natural and traditional healing systems were systematically pushed to the margins — and the pharmaceutical era truly began.
